Position Summary

The Ryan White Center for Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Global Health in the Department of Pediatrics at the Indiana University School of Medicine is a national leader in global pediatric infectious disease clinical care, research andcation. With 28 clinical and research faculty, and a dedicated team of clinical and research staff, the division's focus on global child health reflects the understanding that infectious diseases know no boundaries.

A postdoctoral position is available in the Ryan White Center for Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Global Health at the Indiana University School of Medicine. The Schmidt laboratory works to define the factors that impact the pathogenesis of malaria and identify novel approaches to prevent children from dying from malaria. One of the observations made by Dr. Schmidt's research program was that the composition of bacteria residing within the intestinal tract can profoundly impact the severity of malaria. A postdoctoral fellow is needed to study the influence of gut microbiota on malaria. Candidates must have a PhD degree with a strong research background in immunology, gut microbiome, or microbiology. Experience conducting research on malaria immunology, host-pathogen interactions, gut microbiota, or bacteriology will be prioritized. Work will include, but not be limited to: general immunology laboratory techniques to prepare mouse and human samples for flow cytometry, mouse handling, manipulation of the murine gut microbiota, microbiology, data analysis and interpretation, microbiota bioinformatic analyses, working collaboratively with local, national, and in international research teams to conduct research studies on malaria and gut microbiota, preparing manuscripts, assisting in grant writing, preparing independent grant proposals for internal and external awards, and supervising members of the laboratory.
