The Department of Neurological Surgery has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 2 to join their team.

POSITION PURPOSE

This position is engaged in cerebrovascular neurosurgery and materials science research.

The purpose of the research project(s) this position supports is to develop novel treatments for cerebrovascular disease using bioengineering and chemical engineering techniques.

Research Sponsors/Stakeholders: NIH, Aneurysm and AVM Foundation, Society of NeuroInterventional Surgery, University of Washington, charitable foundations and other sponsors.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Works with other team members to develop new medical devices for cerebrovascular neurosurgery treatments. Uses chemical and bioengineering techniques and designs experiments to test hypotheses.
  • May guide the work of peers, technicians or other support staff as necessary to achieve specific assignments.

90% Cerebrovascular Neurological Surgery Device Research:

  • Under guidance of an experienced scientist, will guide the work of peers, technicians, and other support staff in the cerebrovascular neurological surgery research lab on research projects involving materials science and engineering applications. This includes highly technical polymer coatings of intravascular medical devices, the creation of biodegradable compounds, and assays/experimental testing of such devices.

10% Publications:

  • Will contribute to scientific writing and submission of cerebrovascular neurological surgery publications, presentations, and other public works.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelors degree in Engineering and a minimum of 2 years experience performing materials science research including small molecule or polymer synthesis and surface coatings, OR equivalent combination of education/experience.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Small molecule and polymer synthesis, purification, characterization
  • Surface coatings, specifically in regard to the creation of intravascular medical devices
  • Novel material design including polymer composites, polymer films, hydrogels, nanoparticles, etc.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced degree such as Master's or PhD in chemical engineering is extremely desirable.
  • Knowledge and experience in material characterization and testing methods including rheology, mechanical testing, thermal analysis, microscopy/EM, spectroscopy, surface analysis and other relevant assays strongly desirable.
