Our department is seeking a established Researcher/Scientist to provide expert-level scientific leadership in support of two NIH-funded, multi-institutional research programs focused on intestinal epithelial biology and viral pathogenesis. The Researcher/Scientist V will independently lead the design, execution, and coordination of complex experiments involving five collaborating laboratories, contributing to the development of novel methodologies and scientific insight. The role requires mastery in advanced imaging techniques, including confocal and super-resolution microscopy, as well as deep expertise in molecular and cellular biology. This individual will serve as a senior scientific contributor responsible for generating high-impact publications, developing grant proposals, and mentoring laboratory staff and trainees. Operating with a high degree of autonomy, the incumbent is expected to shape the strategic direction of research projects and represent the labs work within the broader scientific community.

Duties & Responsibilities

Lead the design, coordination, and execution of complex experimental research across multiple laboratories

  • Design, execute, and manage advanced experiments focused on intestinal barrier function and cytomegalovirus infection, funded by two NIH research grants.
  • Coordinate across five laboratories, including external collaborators at Dartmouth and the University of Arizona.
  • Provide scientific leadership to ensure alignment with grant aims and research goals.

Conduct and analyze high-resolution imaging experiments

  • Utilize advanced technologies including AXR confocal, SoRa spinning disk confocal, and super-resolution microscopy to perform live-cell and fixed-cell imaging. Apply advanced image processing using ImageJ, Matlab, and other platforms.
  • Interpret complex imaging datasets and integrate findings into experimental aims.
  • Lead figure preparation and manuscript drafting for high-impact publications.

Drive strategic research development and scientific dissemination

  • Take primary responsibility for writing, editing, and submitting NIH grant proposals, including MPI and collaborative applications.
  • Represent the labs scientific contributions at national and international conferences.
  • Contribute to strategic planning for future research initiatives and funding opportunities.

Mentor and provide scientific leadership within the laboratory

  • Supervise and mentor graduate students and staff scientists.
  • Provide expert guidance on experimental design, resource needs, and project direction.
  • Support a culture of scientific excellence and continuous development.

Contribute to educational mission in imaging and cell biology

  • Support graduate-level instruction by developing curriculum and teaching content related to advanced imaging techniques and experimental design.
  • Collaborate with teaching faculty to ensure content reflects state-of-the-art practices and emerging trends in microscopy.
Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD in a related discipline.
  • 10 years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 15-20 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in cellular and molecular biology, including extensive experience with human primary cells, multiple cell lines, and complex host-pathogen systems.
  • Advanced experience using and training on high-resolution imaging technologies, including confocal and super-resolution microscopy (e.g., AXR, SoRa), and expert-level image processing using ImageJ, Matlab, or equivalent platforms.
  • Extensive leadership experience in multi-institutional collaborative research, with proven ability to coordinate complex, cross-laboratory experiments and maintain scientific continuity across geographically distributed teams.
  • Experience in establishing and managing core facilities.
  • Proven track record of writing and contributing to successful NIH grant applications, including MPI proposals, and producing high-impact peer-reviewed publications.
  • Extensive experience delivering research findings to external stakeholders, collaborators, and at national scientific meetings.
  • Proven track record of identifying emerging research opportunities, adapting experimental strategies, and contributing to the advancement of professional standards within the discipline, requiring strategic thinking and innovation.
  • Excellent track-record of mentorship and interpersonal skills, including experience with development of graduate students, postdocs, and technical staff in a high-functioning research environment.
