About The Outer Banks Hospital

The Outer Banks Hospital is a full-service critical access hospital offering a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services. The 21-bed facility is designed to meet the needs of the coastal community, whose year-round population of approximately 35,000 swells to about 350,000 in the summer season. Its campus includes four ORs, a medical/surgical unit, a labor & delivery suite with a dedicated caesarian section OR, a full rehabilitation therapy center, cancer treatment and radiation therapy center, and a 24-hour emergency department.

Position Summary

The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) performs clinical laboratory tests by standard operating policies and procedures. Understands method principles, performs quality control & calibrations, performs preventive maintenance, and analyzes results as to accuracy, acceptability and critical limits.

As a MLS, you will:

  • Prepare patient specimens as required for laboratory testing and perform laboratory tests specific to department.

  • Monitor test results to assure test quality and validity.

  • Communicate test results in a timely manner. Enter and retrieve data from laboratory computer systems.

  • Assist in orientation or training of new or less experienced employees or students.

  • Clean and maintain laboratory equipment and environment.

  • Demonstrate appropriate, caring behavior in the workplace, treating patients, their families, visitors and staff with respect and dignity.

  • Works alternate shifts as required.

  • Perform other duties as assigned, including, but not limited to, phlebotomy.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors degree or higher in Clinical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology or a biological, chemical or physical science from an accredited institution.

  • OR bachelors degree with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry, obtained within or in addition to the degree is also acceptable.

  • 2 years of experience in a clinical laboratory as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or 1 year of experience in a clinical laboratory as a Medical Laboratory Scientist and certification as MLS, BB, C, H or MB by ASCP or other nationally recognized certifying agency

Other Information

36 hours per week

3 (12 hour) shifts: 6:30 am - 7 pm

3 Week Schedule as follows:

  • Week 1: Monday, Tuesday, Saturday
  • Week 2: Sunday, Monday Tuesday
  • Week 3: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday

Required to work rotational holidays
