Job Title Instructor of Geology and Laboratory Manager Rank Instructor Classification Title Retained Term Position Summary
The Employee is responsible for teaching up to two introductory level Geology Discipline classes and associated laboratories per semester and managing the department laboratories used for course instruction (Physical Geology, Water Science, Earth Materials, and Geophysics Labs). Course assignments could include GEOL 1110 Physical Geology, GEOL 1125 The Planets, GEOL 2110 Historical Geology, and/or GEOL 2320 Intro to Geospatial Analysis. Course delivery may be on-ground, on-line, or a combination of both.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Employee is responsible for preparing courses (course lectures, laboratory exercises, and homework assignments); grading assignments with reasonable turn-around time; submitting midterm and final grades on time; contributing to program outcomes assessment; participating in trainings and orientations, maintaining regular office hours; responding to student emails; and advising students as needed. Refer the Contingent Faculty Handbook for additional details and expectations. The Employee is also responsible for maintaining the department's mineral, rock, and fossil specimen collections, water quality data sampling instrumentation, and miscellaneous laboratory and field equipment and instrumentation.
Minimum Qualifications
A B.S. Environmental Geology, Geology and M.S. in Natural Sciences with a Geology Concentration (ABD). Applicants must have completed all required graduate coursework with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and received approval for thesis research to be considered "ABD" status.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior teaching or teaching assistance experience at the college level.
Prior experience with geoscience and water science field and laboratory equipment calibration, operation, and maintenance.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Depth and breadth in Geology discipline knowledge.
- Proficiency in written and oral communication.
- Ability to design engaging lesson plans.
- Experience in planning field work and leading field trips.
- Capacity to effectively teach diverse student populations, including the ability to explain complex geological concepts clearly and adapt teaching methods to different learning styles.
- Proficiency in geology and geospatial data analysis.
- Knowledge of basic geology laboratory operations, including lab techniques, equipment operations, data analysis, and relevant software.
- Experience in calibrating and operating field equipment.
- Experience with safety awareness and compliance; ability to ensure laboratories meet safety regulations and quality standards, implement safety protocols, and conduct faculty-student training.
- Proficiency in problem-solving; ability to identify, analyze and develop creative solutions for equipment issues.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
