Job Description:
As a Process Safety Engineering Specialist, you will deliver expert technical support to both project and operations teams. You will work closely with cross-functional teams and contractors to address complex challenges, apply sound engineering judgment, and drive the development and implementation of robust technical standards. Your efforts will be centered on enhancing risk management, improving operational efficiency, promoting standardization, and eliminating defects.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide expert guidance on HAZOP (Hazard and Operability) and LOPA (Layer of Protection Analysis), ensuring alignment with Group Defined Practices (GDPs) and Guidance Notes (GNs).
Represent Process Safety in Functional Safety Assessments (FSA Stage 1), driving early risk identification and mitigation strategies.
Support and deliver internal training programs on HAZOP and LOPA methodologies.
Maintain and optimize tools and systems for process safety assessments (e.g., aeFacilitator, PHA Pro, databases, and SharePoint).
Drive innovation by exploring the use of AI and emerging technologies in HAZOP and LOPA practices.
Offer subject matter expertise in Inherently Safer Design (ISD) for projects and operational improvements.
Assess and provide recommendations related to fire, explosion, and toxic hazard risks.
Review and contribute to process safety deliverables from external engineering contractors and consultants.
Ensure compliance with current codes, standards, and regulations in all technical practices.
Contribute to the development and periodic review of Engineering Technical Practices (ETPs) and GNs, incorporating industry learnings and best practices.
What you will need to be successful
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Chemical Engineering or a related discipline.
Preferred: Chartered Engineer or Professional Engineer certification (or equivalent).
Proven experience in the oil & gas, petrochemical, refining, or chemical industries.
Strong background in process safety engineering, including risk management and process modeling tools.
Demonstrated experience in facilitating HAZOP and LOPA studies.
In-depth knowledge of process safety engineering principles.
Proficiency in process safety risk assessment tools and barrier management.
Fluent in English (written and verbal) with the ability to clearly communicate complex technical topics.
Proven ability to apply engineering standards and deliver results within project timelines.
Strong interpersonal and influencing skills, with confidence to engage senior leadership on technical decisions.
Effective in building collaborative relationships across global and cross-functional teams.
Desirable:
Experience working in remote, multicultural, and cross-functional teams.
Leadership in driving continuous improvement initiatives and engineering excellence.
Ability to make pragmatic, value-focused technical decisions.
Self-driven, adaptive, and willing to learn with minimal supervision.
