At Moffitt Cancer Center, we strive to be the leader in understanding the complexity of cancer and applying these insights to contribute to the prevention and cure of cancer. Our diverse team of over 9,000 are dedicated to serving our patients and creating a workspace where every individual is recognized and appreciated. For this reason, Moffitt has been recognized on the 2023 Forbes list of America's Best Large Employers and America's Best Employers for Women, Computerworld magazine's list of 100 Best Places to Work in Information Technology, DiversityInc Top Hospitals & Health Systems and continually named one of the Tampa Bay Time's Top Workplace. Additionally, Moffitt is proud to have earned the prestigious Magnet designation in recognition of its nursing excellence. Moffitt is a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center based in Florida, and the leading cancer hospital in both Florida and the Southeast. We are a top 10 nationally ranked cancer center by Newsweek and have been nationally ranked by U.S. News & World Report since 1999.
Working at Moffitt is both a career and a mission: to contribute to the prevention and cure of cancer. Join our committed team and help shape the future we envision.
Summary
Postdoctoral Fellow - Cancer Metabolism
Research in the Ward Lab is centered on characterizing how systemic metabolism and nutritional status are transmitted to tumor cells via the microenvironment and how mitochondria integrate these metabolic signals during tumor progression and in response to therapy. Current projects in the lab are focused on how diet and exercise influence the tumor redox state, how substrate availability influences iron-sulfur cluster biosynthesis (Nature Communications, PMID: 38762605), a process critical to maintaining nearly all aspects of cellular function, and how the mitochondrial transhydrogenase (NNT) exerts its' pleiotropic regulation of redox metabolism (JEM, PMID: 32196080). We are recruiting a postdoctoral fellow eager to explore these topics and other aspects of mitochondrial redox metabolism through the implementation of chemoproteomics, metabolomics, and super-resolution microscopy.
Position Highlights:
- Use of cutting-edge technologies (e.g. in vivo stable isotope tracing, cysteine-based chemoproteomics, and stimulated emission depletion [STED] super-resolution microscopy).
- Work as part of the Lung Cancer Center of Excellence, which bridges basic and clinical research.
- Work closely with Dr. Ward on the postdoctoral fellow's career development (e.g., grant/manuscript writing, scientific presentations, and networking).
- Moffitt integrates excellent patient care with cutting-edge clinical and basic research. Having a cancer hospital on-site provides unique opportunities for translational research.
- Outstanding mentorship from expert faculty with wide-ranging funded research programs including T32 Training Grants.
The Ideal Candidate:
- Candidates with research experience in metabolism and/or mitochondrial biology are highly encouraged to apply.
- Practical experience with mass spectroscopy-based proteomics or metabolomics is highly desirable, but not required.
- Experience with mouse models of cancer is also highly desirable, but not required.
- Can think independently and has a strong desire to develop independent projects.
- Has excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
Responsibilities:
- Work independently and collaboratively for the mission of the lab.
- Design and execute experiments; analyze and interpret data
- Regularly present findings to the lab and at Moffitt-sponsored seminar series and symposia.
- Attend conferences to present findings to the broader scientific community.
- Mentor and train graduate and undergraduate students.
- Write manuscripts, postdoctoral fellowships, and assist with other funding applications.
Credentials and Qualifications:
- Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. in biology, biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology, or a related field. Ph.D. candidates nearing the completion of their degree in relevant fields are encouraged to apply.
- At least one first-author publication or preprint is highly preferred.
How to Apply: Interested applicants should apply online and include a single PDF file with a cover letter summarizing their research training and accomplishments, scientific interests, and career goals, (2) a current CV, and (3) contact information for three references to Dr. Nate Ward.
