What we want
The Assistant Research Scientist, under general supervision, participates in the development of Gulf War illness rat models and mouse head injury models, as well as conducts the isolation and characterization of extracellular vesicles shed by stem cells or their progeny. Conducts in vitro assays, as well as biochemical and molecular biological assays, collecting and interpreting data, and writing manuscripts. Performs intranasal administration of extracellular vesicles or drugs in animal models of aging, traumatic brain injury, Gulf War Illness, and Alzheimers disease, as well as the characterizes the therapeutic benefits through behavioral, histological, biochemical, and molecular biological measures.

Qualifications
Required Education and Experience
Ph.D. degree in Neuroscience or Biological Sciences.
Relevant professional experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Four years of experience in animal modeling, testing drugs/biologics in animal models of human diseases, biochemical and molecular biological assays, cell culture techniques, isolation of extracellular vesicles from stem cell cultures, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence and confocal microscopy.
Four years of research experience as a postdoctoral fellow.
Experience in working with rats and mice.
Extensive expertise in Molecular biology techniques, fluorescence, and confocal microscopic techniques.
Expertise in cell cultures, particularly neurons, microglia, and astrocytes.
Knowledge of computers and computer software related to the position.
Knowledge of laboratory maintenance and equipment.

Responsibilities
Research
Generates rat models with Gulf War Illness-like symptoms, and mouse models with repetitive head injury, drug/biologic treatment to animals, performs neurobehavioral tests in rats and mice, measures the therapeutic effects of drug/biologic treatment in animal models of disease using brain tissue analysis. Involves immunohistochemical, immunofluorescence, ELISA, WB, and qPCR studies on brain tissue samples to measure the expression of various proteins, mRNAs, and miRNAs.
Prepares cell cultures of neurons and glial cells, as well as brain tissue sections for immunohistochemical studies.
Data Analysis
Analyzes and interprets data with appropriate statistical analysis, prepare data and figures, and write manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
Prepares manuscripts for publication
Assists in preparing research proposals and progress reports.
Presentations
Prepares presentation materials on research topic that may be presented to small and/or large groups. Actively participates in the preparation of required technical progress reports to research sponsors .
Mentorship
Mentors undergraduate and graduate students in their research.
