Title: Senior Innovation Chemist
Location: Carlsbad, CA
Position Summary:
This role is heavily focused on advancing skincare innovation across all dermatological brands within Galderma. The Senior Innovation Chemist is responsible for working through all steps of supporting formula development from ideation to final formulation, including but not limited to researching innovative ingredients, batching formulations, analytical testing, formula transfer, clinical testing support and product stability management. The position will collaborate with and report directly to the Chief Scientific Officer and Head of Innovation, Global R&D.
Responsibilities:
- Support and lead multiple projects and ongoing product development
- Extensive research into biologically active compounds targeting defined cellular pathways.
- Initiate, develop, support and create innovative products to expand the R&D formulation library
- Perform experimental lab work and prepare laboratory samples
- Work directly with the internal clinical team and external CRO's to support clinical validation and safety testing
- Collaborate and attend regular meetings with global markets for geo-expansion
- Document and maintain product development data and outcomes
- Write, review and approve cosmetic and OTC formulas, specifications and procedures
- Maintain continuous stability and compatibility studies
- Test and qualify raw materials
- Communicate with raw material suppliers for ongoing ingredient sample requests
- Research of raw materials, to stay up to date on innovation and technology
- Assist in vendor management activities
- Calibration of lab equipment
- Record work and generate reports as requested
- Prepare, maintain, and report test data for review
- Communicate quality concerns to the Sr. Director of Product Development Director and QA & Regulatory Compliance Manager
- Follow safety protocols when handling materials and discarding waste
- Travel to off-site locations such as CMO's for formula transfer activities
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Sr. Director of Product Development or CSO
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Chemistry or related field required, or equivalent education and directly related years of experience.
- 7-10 years of experience in a Cosmetic Research and Development laboratory
- Strong knowledge of cosmetic ingredients, formulation techniques, and testing methods.
- Comprehensive knowledge of skin biology and function.
- In-depth understanding of regulatory requirements and safety standards in the cosmetic industry.
- Strong understanding of Good Manufacturing (GMP) and Good Laboratory (GLP) Practices
- Experience with scaling formulations from lab to full production.
- 10-20% travel is likely and a key component of this position
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word for data analysis, documentation, and reporting.
- Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with employees and all other internal and external contacts
- Ability to think strategically and be extremely detail oriented
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team oriented, collaborative environment
- Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and manage time effectively.
- Effective planning, relationship-building, and strong problem-solving skills
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position for long periods of time
- Must be able to perform lifting, dexterity and repetitive motion
- The person in this position needs to occasionally stoop, bend, and kneel
- Constantly operates laboratory equipment
- Ability to occasionally lift/move inventory more than 30 pounds.
- Must be able to perform the physical tasks required by the position
