The Department of Environmental Quality/Office of Environmental Assessment has a vacancy.

The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality's (LDEQ) mission is to provide service to the people of Louisiana through comprehensive environmental protection to promote and protect health, safety, and welfare.

The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) is seeking a visionary data systems expert to serve as the technical authority for Underground Storage Tank (UST) program data. If you're fluent in both environmental regulations and database architecture-and thrive at the intersection of IT strategy and public service-this is your chance to shape how critical environmental data is collected, managed, and leveraged. As the trusted advisor to executive leadership, you'll design and implement the systems that power UST prevention and corrective action across Louisiana.

A bachelor's degree in an environmental, biological, atmospheric, chemical, health, nuclear or physical science field, an engineering field, a geography/geosciences field, a natural resources field, or in a statistics or quantitative methods field plus four years of experience in an environmental program, nuclear energy or radiation protection program; Geographic Information Systems (GIS); an environmental, analytical, or research laboratory, LIMS (Lab Integrated Management Systems), OR laboratory auditing; OR

A master's degree in an environmental, biological, atmospheric, chemical, health, nuclear or physical science field, an engineering field, a geography/geosciences field, a natural resources field, or in a statistics or quantitative methods field plus three years of experience in an environmental program, nuclear energy or radiation protection program; Geographic Information Systems (GIS); an environmental, analytical, or research laboratory, LIMS (Lab Integrated Management Systems), or laboratory auditing; OR

A doctorate in any of the qualifying educational fields plus two years of experience in an environmental program, nuclear energy or radiation protection program; Geographic Information Systems (GIS); an environmental, analytical, or research laboratory, LIMS (Lab Integrated Management Systems), or laboratory auditing.

Supplemental Qualifications:

Two years of scientific/technical environmental experience at or above the Environmental Scientist 3 level in the evaluation of Underground Storage Tank systems and/or releases from these systems through the performance of UST compliance inspections, investigations or site remediation.

Job Duties:

This position serves as the expert technical advisor to executive management for all activities regarding management of Underground Storage Tank (UST) data and data systems. The incumbent must have experience and working knowledge in UST prevention and corrective action statutes, rules, and regulations to determine requirements for UST data, data flow and databases. The incumbent must possess an information technology background and be experienced in managing the flow of data from collection to reporting. The incumbent must have experience with various Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) databases that support the UST prevention and corrective action programs. The incumbent must also have the ability to advise, and independently plan, organize, and implement multi-process data work flows and systems necessary to address the long term data and system needs for the UST programs.

  • Serves as the expert technical advisor to executive management for all activities regarding management of Underground Storage Tank (UST) data and data systems.
  • Must have experience and working knowledge in UST prevention and corrective action statutes, rules, and regulations to determine requirements for UST data, data flow and databases.
  • Must possess an information technology background and be experienced in managing the flow of data from collection to reporting.
  • Must have experience with various Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) databases that support the UST prevention and corrective action programs.
  • Must have the ability to advise, and independently plan, organize, and implement multi-process data work flows and systems necessary to address the long term data and system needs for the UST programs. Work is performed in accordance with Department rules, regulations, policies, quality management plans, state and federal laws, and best professional judgment.
  • Will serve in the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, Office of Environmental Assessment, Underground Storage Tank Division (USTD). Supervision will be received directly from the UST Environmental Division Administrator.

Appointment Type: This position promotional and open to permanent DEQ employees only.

Domicile: East Baton Rouge

Compensation: This position offers a Special Entrance Rate (SER) listed below. This is the minimum compensation that may be offered. The job title and salary offered will be determined based on qualifications and experience.

  • Environmental Scientist Senior DCL-B: $38.45 per hour or $3,075.60 biweekly
