Lab Technician
Job Description

The Lab Technician performs sensory, physical, and chemical tests on finished products to ensure they meet established specifications. This role involves evaluating the Bill of Material (BOM) for completeness and proper documentation, recording test data, maintaining laboratory work lists in the LIMS system, and reporting nonconformance with immediate corrective actions. The technician performs inspections for manufacturing equipment, storage equipment, and sanitation cleaning and participates in check sample programs with outside institutions as well as internal proficiency programs to verify accuracy. Adherence to proper GMPs and GLPs is required, along with the use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Additional responsibilities include assisting with Raw Material testing, COA review, COA filing, inspecting Finished Product Packaging, and approving and applying final wrap with automated equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform sensory, physical, and chemical tests on finished products.
  • Evaluate Bill of Material (BOM) for completeness and proper documentation.
  • Record test data and maintain laboratory work list in LIMS system.
  • Report nonconformance with immediate corrective actions.
  • Conduct inspections for manufacturing and storage equipment and sanitation cleaning.
  • Participate in check sample programs and internal proficiency programs.
  • Follow proper GMPs and GLPs.
  • Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Assist with Raw Material testing, COA review, and COA filing.
  • Inspect Finished Product Packaging for correct labels and configurations.
  • Approve and apply final wrap with automated equipment.
  • Perform wet chemistry product testing and equipment inspections.
  • Conduct procedural audits and check labels.
  • Rotate stations weekly, spending 70% in the laboratory and 30% on the floor.
Essential Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Food Science/Chemistry or related field.
  • 6-12 months of experience in quality assurance/control/testing.
  • Experience in a laboratory setting, possibly from academic training.
  • Proficiency in wet chemistry.
  • No food allergies, due to tasting requirements.
  • Experience in manufacturing, viscosity, pH, and sample testing.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree with relevant experience or Associates degree with 2 years experience in food processing.
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions and correspondences.
  • Effective communication skills for both individuals and small groups.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, understanding, and speaking English.
Work Environment

This position operates on a 3rd shift schedule, Monday to Friday from 10 PM to 6 AM, with initial training on the 1st shift for approximately two months. The role involves exposure to chemicals and solvents during product testing, with most tasks requiring low physical activity. Occasional lifting of materials up to 50 lbs may be necessary. Tasks vary to prevent visual or mental fatigue. The role requires talking, hearing, tasting, and smelling, including tasting various food allergens and animal-based products. The employee may occasionally walk, use hands to handle or feel objects, and perform actions such as stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Specific vision abilities, including close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus, are required. The work environment may involve exposure to fumes or airborne particles, with a usual noise level.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $21.00/hr.
