Department Information

Within this setting, the Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Environmental Health Sciences is committed to advance its research and teaching in infectious disease epidemiology and modeling and to secure external funding to support its endeavors in this subfield. This position is expected to contribute to such research endeavors by completing research projects, publishing research articles in peer-reviewed scholarly journals and submitting grant proposals to external funding agencies.

Job Summary

Reporting to the department chair, the postdoctoral research associate requires a workload of research (80%) and teaching (20%). The postdoctoral research associate will work under the supervision of faculty on infectious disease-related epidemiological, statistical, and mathematical modeling research projects that will lead to the submission of grant proposals and publication of research outputs in peer-reviewed journals. Specifically, the team will work on compartmental models and sub-epidemic models in infectious disease epidemiology. The postdoctoral research associate will work closely with the team at Georgia Southern University and their collaborators. The teaching responsibilities comprise of two 3-credit hour courses in one academic year. The position is a limited term, 12-month, non-tenure track, appointment.

Required Qualifications

Earned PhD, ScD or DrPH in public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, statistics, mathematics, data sciences, or computer sciences, or a closely related field, by August 1, 2025, with at least 18 graduate semester hours in epidemiology or biostatistics.

Proficiency in R and MATLAB programming languages.

Willingness to engage with institutional student success initiatives.

Commitment to engaging with best practice initiatives in instruction and pedagogy, mentoring, and curriculum design and development.

Demonstrated commitment to advancing a strong and growing research and scholarship agenda and the production of research/creative activities as appropriate to the discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with the development and implementation of compartmental models and sub-epidemic models of infectious disease transmission dynamics.

Experience with conducting analysis of epidemiologic data of respiratory infections, including COVID-19.

Strong interest in infectious disease epidemiology.

Proficiency in other programming languages, such as SAS, SQL or Python.

Career experience as an infectious disease modeler in public health agencies.

Strong track record of research publications published in peer-reviewed scholarly journals.

Experience in teaching epidemiology or public health courses as instructor of record in academic settings.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Proposed Salary

Commensurate with experience.

This is an exempt position paid on a monthly basis.
