We are currently searching for a Laboratory Manager. This role will provide support services to satisfy the overall operational objectives of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. The primary objective is to provide services and deliverables through the Hematology Branch (HB). This is a full-time opportunity located in Bethesda, MD.
Coordinate and support the design, execution, and analysis of laboratory experiments in alignment with the labs scientific objectives.
Collaborate with researchers on assay development, method optimization, and interpretation of experimental results.
Lead the training and mentoring of laboratory staff, postdoctoral fellows, and interns in molecular biology, biochemistry, and analytical techniques such as qPCR, Sanger sequencing, flow cytometry, and DNA/RNA extraction.
Ensure adherence to protocols and promote a culture of safety and scientific rigor.
Oversee daily lab operations including procurement of supplies, equipment maintenance, vendor coordination, and compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
Maintain laboratory documentation, safety manuals, and chemical hygiene plans.
Manage the labs operating budget, track expenditures, and coordinate funding requests.
Handle purchasing external services such as genetic testing and ensure financial accountability for clinical and research activities.
Supervise the processing, storage, and inventory of clinical and research samples using systems like BSI and CRIS.
Ensure accurate recordkeeping for specimen tracking, cell counts, and freezing media. Coordinate sample shipments to national and international collaborators.
Maintain and troubleshoot scientific instruments including HPLCs, spectrophotometers, centrifuges, and genetic analyzers.
Train staff in proper use and ensure calibration and functionality of all lab equipment.
Serve as the labs liaison for inspections and audits.
Prepare and submit animal study protocols and ensure compliance with institutional and federal guidelines.
Update research project registrations and documentation for annual reviews.
Analyze and interpret research data; contribute s to the preparation of abstracts, presentations, and manuscripts.
Conduct statistical and bioinformatics analyses to support publication and grant submissions.
Participate in lab meetings and planning sessions to guide future research directions.
Collaborate with internal departments, external partners, and research monitors to ensure alignment of resources and compliance with study protocols.
Represent the lab at scientific conferences and external meetings, particularly in areas related to bone marrow failure diseases.
Lead onboarding and instruction for visiting students and fellows, fostering a collaborative and inclusive research environment.
What You Will Need :
Masters degree in Biology, Chemistry or a related discipline OR Bachelors Degree plus FOUR (4) years of specialized experience is equivalent to a Masters degree.
A minimum of EIGHT (8) years of laboratory experience.
General experience with basic biochemical and molecular biologic techniques, with an understanding of the general scientific principles.
Proficiency in site-directed mutagenesis and basic protein biochemistry.
Strong communications skills, both oral and written.
Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.
What Would Be Nice To Have :
Previous experience with NIH preferred.
Ability to be self-motivated, detail oriented and have strong organizational skills.
