About the position:
We are seeking a highly skilled and innovative Organic Synthesis Chemist with proven industry experience in a research and development (R&D) environment , specifically focused on the synthesis and development of organic color pigments, dyes, and related chromophores . The successful candidate will be responsible for designing synthetic routes, developing new pigment molecules, and supporting scale-up for commercial applications of electrophoretic displays.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and execute multi-step organic synthesis of dyes, pigments, and intermediates to meet the color spectra requirements of E Ink products
- Develop and optimize synthetic pathways with a focus on scalability, yield, purity, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability
- Characterize synthesized compounds using NMR, HPLC, UV-Vis, IR, MS, and other analytical techniques
- Lead pigment finishing efforts, including crystal form control, particle size management, and surface treatments to enhance application properties such as surface charge, dispersibility, color strength, thermal stability, and lightfastness
- Collaborate with application scientists, formulation chemists, and process engineers to evaluate pigment performance in electrophoretic display systems and support pilot-to-commercial scale-up
- Maintain detailed laboratory records, contribute to technical documentation, patent filings, and internal knowledge sharing
- Monitor emerging pigment technologies, competitor activity, and market trends to identify new innovation opportunities
- Ensure all R&D activities are conducted in compliance with environmental, health, and safety regulations
Qualifications:
- Ph.D. or M.S. in Organic Chemistry , Synthetic Chemistry , or a closely related field
- 3+ years of hands-on industry experience in organic synthesis within an R&D environment , with a focus on color pigments, dyes , or organic colorants
- Solid knowledge of pigment chemistry, including azo, quinacridone, phthalocyanine, perylene, or anthraquinone classes
- Strong command of modern analytical tools and structure elucidation
- Track record of working in cross-functional industrial teams and delivering on project timelines\
- Excellent problem-solving, project management, and scientific communication skills
Preferred Skills & Attributes:
- Familiarity with regulatory and safety requirements for pigments and dyes (e.g., REACH, TSCA)
- Experience with crystallization techniques, polymorphism, and pigment surface modification
- Experience collaborating with external research partners, toll manufacturers, or academic institutions
- Exposure to high-performance pigment development for applications such as inkjet inks, automotive coatings, or high-end plastics
