Reports to : Department Chair (Earth & Environment)

Job Description:
The Research Laboratory Manager and Technician actively participates in technical support of the teaching and research programs of faculty and students, providing expertise in laboratory and field methods and in computing technology used primarily in the Department of Earth and Environment, but also with occasional support of faculty and students in Chemistry, Physics, and Biology.
Essential Functions:
Manage the laboratory facilities and train faculty, staff, and students in the use of varied types of instrumentation, sample preparation, and research methodologies. Current facilities and equipment includes a tabletop scanning electron microscope with EDS capabilities, an inductively coupled plasma optical-emission spectrometer, an ED-XRF spectrometer, a WD-X-ray fluorescence spectrometer, an X-ray diffractometer, an IRMS stable isotope mass spectrometer with an elemental combustion analyzer, two liquid scintillation counters, two gamma spectrometers, multiple drones (one with IR capabilities), geophysical instruments, a survey-grade RTK-GPS unit and other GPS equipment, a GIS computer lab, a visualization lab, a rock-crushing and thin-section lab, and a suite of petrographic microscopes. The Lab Manager is responsible for maintaining clean and orderly laboratory and teaching spaces in ENE.
Oversee quality control assurance and daily activities in the labs, including the operation of instrumentation and support of development of new analytical techniques related to ongoing research. Responsible for basic maintenance of analytical laboratory instruments and must demonstrate a willingness to be trained to work with new analytical instruments as acquired. Serve as the primary liaison with outside vendors and on-campus partners (F&O, etc) regarding maintenance contracts and instrument troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair.
Implement College health and safety policies in the department laboratories, including development and implementation of best management practices.
Manage purchasing of lab supplies and equipment. Work with the Chair and Academic Department Coordinator throughout the fiscal year to monitor department spending.
Assist faculty with the incorporation of new technologies in the classroom, field, and laboratory as deemed appropriate by the Chair and Department faculty. Assist faculty in the development and implementation of instructional materials related to the use of the existing and new analytical instruments, software applications, and field equipment as it is acquired.
Serve as liaison with F&M's Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) to maintain ENE's compliance with environmental safety policies.
Assist with activities related to the Geoscience Founders Society including, but not restricted to, assisting the Director of the Society in the preparation of the annual calendar (sent to all members of the Society), newsletters and interactions with alumni that further the goals of the Society and Department as deemed appropriate by the Chair in consultation with the Department faculty.
Assists professors with classes, labs, and field trips when available. Work with faculty and students to assure the ENE vans are kept clean, and with F&O to assure vans are maintained.
Coordinate the renovation of lab spaces to accommodate new or moving of existing analytical equipment.
All other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree.
At least 3 years of relevant experience in Geology, Environmental Science, laboratory and field work.
Possess familiarity with common laboratory health and safety protocols.
Demonstrated experience managing several different types of laboratory equipment.
Experience with GIS software, Adobe suite, and any specialized instrument software.
Excellent oral, written, interpersonal communication skills.
Proficiency in Google Suite Products (Docs, Gmail, Sheets, Slides, Drive)
Evidence of a commitment to community and belonging.
Valid driver's license.
Successful interview.
Successful completion of background checks.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's Degree.
3 or more years of relevant experience in Geology, Environmental Science, laboratory and field work.
Prior experience in a Higher Education setting.
Additional Information:

Current facilities and equipment includes a tabletop scanning electron microscope with EDS capabilities, an inductively coupled plasma optical-emission spectrometer, an ED-XRF spectrometer, a WD-X-ray fluorescence spectrometer, an X-ray diffractometer, an IRMS stable isotope mass spectrometer with an elemental combustion analyzer, two liquid scintillation counters, two gamma spectrometers, multiple drones (one with IR capabilities), geophysical instruments, a survey-grade RTK-GPS unit and other GPS equipment, a GIS computer lab, a visualization lab, a rock-crushing and thin-section lab, and a suite of petrographic microscopes. The Lab Manager is responsible for maintaining clean and orderly laboratory and teaching spaces in ENE.
Oversee quality control assurance and daily activities in the labs, including the operation of instrumentation and support of development of new analytical techniques related to ongoing research. Responsible for basic maintenance of analytical laboratory instruments and must demonstrate a willingness to be trained to work with new analytical instruments as acquired. Serve as the primary liaison with outside vendors and on-campus partners (F&O, etc) regarding maintenance contracts and instrument troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair.
Implement College health and safety policies in the department laboratories, including development and implementation of best management practices.
Manage purchasing of lab supplies and equipment. Work with the Chair and Academic Department Coordinator throughout the fiscal year to monitor department spending.
Assist faculty with the incorporation of new technologies in the classroom, field, and laboratory as deemed appropriate by the Chair and Department faculty. Assist faculty in the development and implementation of instructional materials related to the use of the existing and new analytical instruments, software applications, and field equipment as it is acquired.
Serve as liaison with F&M's Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) to maintain ENE's compliance with environmental safety policies.
Assist with activities related to the Geoscience Founders Society including, but not restricted to, assisting the Director of the Society in the preparation of the annual calendar (sent to all members of the Society), newsletters and interactions with alumni that further the goals of the Society and Department as deemed appropriate by the Chair in consultation with the Department faculty.
Assists professors with classes, labs, and field trips when available. Work with faculty and students to assure the ENE vans are kept clean, and with F&O to assure vans are maintained.
Coordinate the renovation of lab spaces to accommodate new or moving of existing analytical equipment.
All other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree.
At least 3 years of relevant experience in Geology, Environmental Science, laboratory and field work.
Possess familiarity with common laboratory health and safety protocols.
Demonstrated experience managing several different types of laboratory equipment.
Experience with GIS software, Adobe suite, and any specialized instrument software.
Excellent oral, written, interpersonal communication skills.
Proficiency in Google Suite Products (Docs, Gmail, Sheets, Slides, Drive)
Evidence of a commitment to community and belonging.
Valid driver's license.
Successful interview.
Successful completion of background checks.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's Degree.
3 or more years of relevant experience in Geology, Environmental Science, laboratory and field work.
Prior experience in a Higher Education setting.
