Salary: Competitive salary based on education and/or experience and $500 bonus after 6 months and $1,000 bonus after 1 year!

Position:

The Reference Laboratory Manager will provide direct oversite of the Reference Laboratory operations to the Reference Laboratory staff including scheduling, review of QC, facilitating resolution of problems with customers, providing in-services to Transfusion Service Clients and performing Transfusion Service Assessments, as needed. The manager will serve as an on-site subject matter expert in the area of Immunohematology, provide compatibility testing and consultation services for resolution of complex serological problems, perform technical reviews, oversee training and competency of Reference Lab employees, and assist with development, writing, and implementing SOPs.

Assist with special projects assigned by the Executive Director of the Reference Laboratories or OBI Executive Management staff.

The Reference Laboratory Manager will communicate directly with the Director of Reference Laboratories for assistance with Reference Laboratory operations, major issues, internal or external, and if any major changes are needed, or requested, for the Reference Laboratory which require a process change within the operations of the Reference Laboratory, to include all patient and donor testing and the rare red blood cell inventory.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree with completion of a Medical Technology (MT)/ Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) training program
  • ASCP registration preferred
  • Completion of an accredited SBB program and/or eligibility to sit for SBB certification
  • Leadership skills
  • Ability to resolve complex serological problems independently
  • Provide clear and concise consultation to other medical technologists and physicians
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Review and oversee the completion of quality control, calibration, maintenance, and validation/verification procedures for laboratory equipment.
  • Ensures that the laboratory has and maintains the resources needed to perform testing. This includes staff, materials, reagents and supplies.
  • Ensures the laboratory maintains documents and records in a concurrent and controlled manner.
  • Ensure staff follow The Blood Institute SOPs and Policies as outlined.
  • Perform scheduling of staff to cover all shifts within the Reference Laboratory.
  • Approve time off requests for laboratory staff to include PTO and sick leave.
  • Provide and oversee work assignments assigned to Reference Laboratory staff.
  • Ensures the ongoing competency of Reference Laboratory staff.
  • Provide counseling as needed for laboratory staff performance.
  • Perform annual reviews for Reference Laboratory staff and develop goals as needed.
  • Oversee the hiring and training of new employees.
  • Participate in the quarterly Transfusion Review committee.
  • Visit transfusion service clients to perform on-site assessment and in-service trainings.
  • Assist technologists in evaluating patient work-ups.
  • Serve as subject matter expert in the area of Immunohematology.
  • Perform technical reviews of consultation cases.
  • Receive hospital orders, guide lab couriers or Storage and Distribution on the coordination of specimen pick-ups and product delivery as needed.
  • Assist technologists with bench work and call, as needed.
  • Assist technologists with bench testing, if needed, and if competency is maintained.
  • Evaluate reagent and test methods to ensure that technology is appropriately used.
  • Provide technical assistance to other OBI staff and hospital customers.
  • Assist the Reference Laboratory Directory with the development, management, and administration of capital and expense budgets.
  • Ensure the monthly and yearly inventory for the Materials Department is completed.
  • Help develop and write SOPs for the Reference Laboratories.
  • Communicate directly with the Executive Director of the Reference Laboratory and Medical Director and assist in duties, as needed.
  • Ensure all regulatory and accrediting agencies standards and requirements are met and followed in the Reference Laboratory.
  • Participate in the preparation of accrediting agency inspections.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Reference Laboratory and other OBI operational areas in the development of systemwide projects.
  • Assist IT and other departments with the development and maintenance of computer systems and software, as needed.
  • Assist with the development of validation/verification plans and execution of validation/verifications for equipment, software, and systems, as needed.
  • Assist with special projects as assigned by the Director of the Reference Laboratory or Medial Directors, or as needed by other OBI operational departments.
  • Develop and maintain a professional relationship with other Blood Center departments, customers, educational facilities, within the national IRL sector, and with professional organizations.
