Part-time Laboratory Technician for Physical Sciences Department: Department of Physical Science, and Title III-F, HSI STEM Reports To: Chair of the Department of Physical Sciences Location : On Campus (River Forest, IL) Employment : Part-time 20 hours/week. Starting August 2025 and ending May 30, 2026 Position Summary: Prepares standard equipment, facilities, and/or solutions for laboratory experiments, in accordance with detailed procedures and instructions. Cleans, breaks down, and stores laboratory equipment, facilities, and supplies after completion of laboratory exercises, as required.
Duties and Responsibilities: Chemistry Lab Preparation. Duties include, but are not limited to: Setting up, taking down, and cleaning equipment and glassware Aliquoting reagents for student experiments. Other duties as assigned (10%). Duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Proctoring Exams/Tutoring upper division courses as needed.
  • Supervising Undergraduate Lab preparation positions, including maintaining a lab safety certification protocol for all lab preparation roles. Reminding students to submit Paycor records in a timely manner.
  • Generating practical protocols and instructions for the operation of equipment and review of equipment for replacement/repair (e.g., proper functioning of microscopes, pipettes, etc.)
  • Aliquoting reagents, cleaning freezer stocks, and making lists of what we have. Pre-checking reagent activity. Running sample gels. Rehearsing/dry running laboratory protocols.
  • Cleaning of equipment like pipettes and centrifuges. Maintaining inventory records.
  • Preparation for future term laboratory courses.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in science or math education or a related field
  • Experience with Physical lab preparation
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to work in a team and independently with creativity, professionalism, and a positive attitude
  • Excellent listening, interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, and attention to detail
  • Ability to develop, organize, and independently manage a variety of projects simultaneously and meet all required deadlines
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite: Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and OneDrive
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Lab safety certification either as background experience or obtained during training for this position.
Physical Demands:
  • Ability to spend long durations of the workday sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Ability to lift up to 15 pounds at times

Salary and FLSA Status
  • Salary: $25 per hour
  • FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, Part-time, 20 hours a week
