Description:

Provides expertise in support of research projects in engineering, biology, mathematics, statistics, computer science, physics, etc. Prepares and edits research papers, proposal, and reports. Performs advanced testing procedures and analyses of data. May prepare samples for testing. Performs advanced testing procedure and performs analyses of data. Makes uses of a variety of specialized equipment typical within area of specialization. May contribute to grant proposal development. Ensures experiments are performed according to specifications. May make recommendations to changes in procedure, processes, or experimental design. Possesses, understands, and applies an advanced knowledge of a professional natural, physical, or engineering field or multiple fields of specialization to develop unique and new approaches or ideas. Understands and uses research tools and equipment and utilizes effective management techniques.

  1. Plans and conducts research in one or more large and complex areas of specialization.

  2. Reviews progress of projects. May liaison with other areas of specialization to obtain support or technical expertise for projects.

  3. Defines procedures or processes to be used in the experimental processes.

  4. May personally conduct important and/or technically complex investigations.

  5. Operates with considerable latitude for unreviewed action.

  6. Reviews and evaluates the effectiveness of personnel.

Responsibilities:

Supports the Principal Investigators of the research projects to ensure all aspects of project delivery goals and objectives are completed.

Consults with faculty to determine equipment purchase priorities, condition of existing equipment, and scheduled laboratory activities

Assists in onboarding new lab members and trains lab members ensuring they are familiar with lab procedures and safety protocols.

Assists in implementing and maintaining lab safety and animal use protocols, and other regulatory documentation and compliance reports.

Assigns tasks and delegates work to research lab members via informal direct oversight.

Oversees a variety of scientific experiments, including mouse experiments (handling animals not a requirement) and submits protocols for IACUC review/approval.

Operates scientific equipment and demonstrates use and care of the equipment to research personnel in the laboratory.

Maintains lab organization, including inventory management and space utilization.

Maintains and updates the database and physical storage lab biorepository including cell lines and antibodies.

Works with staff members to process purchase orders for equipment and supplies and tracks their progress to ensure timely delivery.

Works with faculty and staff members to ensure timely submission of research proposals and progress reports.

Coordinates travel arrangements for the Principal Investigators and lab members.

The relative balance between management and scientific experiments can be customized based on personal preference in consultation with the supervising faculty.

Preferred Qualifications:

PhD degree in a relevant field of sciences or engineering.

Strong communication skills (written/verbal) in English and strong interpersonal skills are required.

Certification in program management is a plus.

Tissue culture expertise is a plus.
