Ethicon Research & Development, a member of Johnson & Johnson's Family of Companies, is recruiting for a Senior Scientist, Mass Spectrometry to be located in Raritan, NJ.

We offer a broad range of products, platforms and technologies-including sutures, hemostasis products, breast implant, surgical staplers, trocars, energy devices and synthetic mesh devices. These products are used in a wide variety of open and minimally invasive surgical procedures. We combine the products and services of two market leading legacy companies, both with long histories of medical innovation. Ethicon, Inc. based in Raritan, New Jersey, was founded more than 80 years ago as a pioneer in suture development and manufacturing, helping to transform the safety and efficiency of surgery.

You will become part of the Analytical Characterization team in partnership with the company's Research and Development organization. You are expected to cultivate strong team collaboration with other analytical associates in techniques such as NMR, FTIR, and Gel Permeation Chromatography.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Apply state-of-art Mass Spectrometry techniques including GC/MS, LC/MS, and ICP/MS to support research and development
  • Identify trace unknown impurities in complex polymer matrices, degradation products of polymer systems, small molecule-polymer interaction products
  • Conduct extractable/leachable studies
  • Maintain Mass Spectrometers
  • Interpret test results and author scientific reports
  • Collaborate with inter-disciplinary colleagues such as toxicologists, engineers, polymer chemists, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • PhD with minimum one year industry experience is preferred
  • Ph.D. in Chemistry is highly preferred
  • Masters degree with 4 years of industry experience

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Possess in-depth knowledge of Mass Spectrometry principles and have proven hands-on problem-solving experience with chemical systems
  • Experience with instrument maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Display passion for science and innovation
  • Love to solve problems with analytical technologies and chemistry knowledge
  • Like to work in a team environment that embraces change and continuous technical improvement
  • Have good interpersonal relationship and people skills
  • Have excellent oral & written communication skills

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • Familiarity with FTIR and other spectroscopic techniques
  • Experience with synthetic polymer characterization
  • Familiarity with synthetic polymer chemistry

Other:

  • This position is located in Raritan, NJ and requires up to 10% travel
