Surgical Scientist

Piper Companies is looking for a Surgical Scientist to join a leading preclinical research organization located in Norton Shores, MI.

Responsibilities of the Surgical Scientist include:

  • Perform surgical procedures to support in vivo research protocols, including study setup, anesthesia induction, aseptic technique, and post-operative monitoring
  • Assist in drafting and reviewing anesthesia and surgical protocols in collaboration with Study Directors and IACUC
  • Contribute to the development and optimization of surgical models for therapeutic research
  • Train and coordinate training for Surgery Technicians; mentor In-Life Technicians in surgical and perioperative procedures
  • Evaluate and revise SOPs to align with current best practices and regulatory standards
  • Assist in sourcing and maintaining surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies
  • Conduct procedures involving small animal models (initially guinea pigs), with future scope including large animal species (sheep, goats, dogs)
  • Perform or assist with humane euthanasia in accordance with institutional and regulatory guidelines
  • Maintain a work schedule split between office-based planning (35%) and hands-on laboratory/operating room activities (65%)
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications for the Surgical Scientist include:

  • Bachelor's, Master's, or equivalent degree in animal or life science-related discipline
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in surgical research, preferably in a regulated industry setting
  • SRT or SRS Certification through the Academy of Surgical Research preferred but not required
  • Experience with ophthalmic/ocular surgical procedures is advantageous
  • Demonstrated proficiency in sterile surgical technique, surgical instrumentation, and perioperative care
  • Ability to troubleshoot surgical complications and equipment malfunctions
  • Strong understanding of GLP compliance, IACUC protocols, and federal regulations governing laboratory animal welfare
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to adapt to laboratory information management systems (LIMS)
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams
  • Physical capability to perform laboratory tasks including lifting, carrying, and prolonged standing
  • Willingness to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and extended shifts as needed

Compensation for Surgical Scientist includes:

  • Rate Range: $65,000-$100,000 annually
  • Bonus: 15% Annual Performance Bonus
