ASCP Medical Laboratory Scientist Educator

We are seeking a dedicated ASCP Medical Laboratory Scientist Educator to coordinate, monitor, and facilitate technical staff training and competency programs in a healthcare setting located in the Southeastern United States region. This role ensures compliance with OSHA, CLIA, CAP, and other regulatory standards while fostering a supportive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee daily operations of laboratory training and competency programs for all laboratory personnel.
  • Review and implement updates from regulatory agencies related to training and competency in collaboration with Quality Assurance teams.
  • Develop, conduct, and approve staff training sessions on various laboratory topics.
  • Identify and provide remedial training as needed, documenting and coordinating actions with management and QA.
  • Maintain comprehensive records of all training and competency documentation, ensuring proper storage and accessibility.
  • Conduct audits of training and competency processes to ensure ongoing compliance.
  • Assist in developing evaluation criteria and identifying trends to recommend corrective actions.
  • Serve as a resource to clarify policies and procedures for laboratory staff.
  • Support the development and validation of laboratory procedures in line with departmental and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare or assist with comprehensive and individual validation plans as necessary.
Education

Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science with clinical training across neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, and adult patient populations is required. Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) through ASCP or equivalent is mandatory.

Experience

Minimum of five years working as a Medical Laboratory Scientist is required. Experience in quality assurance, training, education, and competency assessment is preferred.

Requirements and Skills
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory methodologies and ability to evaluate new techniques for management approval.
  • Proven management skills including decision-making, supervision, and fostering positive team dynamics.
  • Flexibility to work additional hours or shifts and perform under stress.
  • Excellent communication skills, including listening, writing, and verbal interaction.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements such as safety protocols, CAP, JCAHO, CLIA, and federal guidelines.
  • Understanding of developmental models relevant to adolescent and adult patient care to guide staff training and orientation.
Physical and Work Environment

Ability to operate laboratory equipment while sitting or standing, with moderate walking, standing, sitting, and lifting. Occasional travel to multiple hospital sites within the region may be required. Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and toxic substances is possible. The role demands strong multitasking, independent decision-making under pressure, and effective stress management.
