The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is currently hiring for a Public Health Microbiologist (PHM) II (shall consider PHM I) within our Center for Laboratory Sciences (CLS). In this role, you will serve as a Microbiology Training Scientist, preparing, organizing, and providing subject matter expertise to conduct didactic and laboratory hands-on training for PHM trainees.
CLS is based on the Richmond Campus which employs more than 1,200 people. The Richmond Campus is a flat, 29-acre property located in Richmond's Marina Bay. The CLS serves to protect and promote the health of all Californians through innovative and collaborative infectious disease and environmental testing, including provision of investigation and surveillance activities which form the basis of disease response and prevention. The CLS works to bring together emerging scientific capabilities in testing, analytics, and communications reflecting a new level of coordination, support, and leadership for the public health laboratory system at the state, local and national level. In addition, the Center relies on a continuous improvement infrastructure as a core value in developing solutions that emphasize a culture of quality and performance through performance management success.

Responsibilities:
Provide technical leadership and assist by using knowledge and experience in public health laboratory and clinical diagnostic testing and complex analysis of data in areas of bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, serology, molecular, and other microbiology methods and principles
Use advanced, molecular, and sophisticated lab equipment, technologies, and complex techniques to demonstrate and process samples, as well as to detect, isolate, identify, and characterize microorganisms
Prepare, plan, and organize assigned training modules by processing isolates, growing microbiology cultures, maintaining stock cultures, maintaining inventories of equipment, lab media, reagents, and supplies, Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs), receiving samples, preparing reagents and media for testing, and ordering and receiving supplies
Adhere, update, and ensure compliance with the CDPH lab safety and biosafety requirements, federal and state regulations for self and lab personnel, and test procedures for the detection, identification, and characterization of various pathogens and organisms used in PHM Training
Perform test methods that include, but are not limited to, classical microbiology for microorganism isolation and identification, molecular methods such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) sequencing, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry (MS) and working knowledge of Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS)
Set up tests and assays, and provide characterization through isolation, detection, and identification of test isolate microorganisms, samples, and/or bacterial toxins
