ASCP Medical Laboratory Scientist - Laboratory Educator

Summary: Coordinate, monitor, and facilitate technical staff training and competency programs in alignment with OSHA, CLIA, CAP, and organizational policies. This role ensures laboratory personnel maintain high standards through effective education and oversight.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and oversee daily laboratory training and competency initiatives for all staff.
  • Review and interpret regulatory agency updates, implementing necessary changes in collaboration with Quality Assurance teams.
  • Develop, conduct, and approve training sessions on diverse laboratory topics.
  • Identify and provide remedial training when needed, documenting actions and coordinating with management.
  • Maintain comprehensive records of training and competency documentation, ensuring proper storage and accessibility.
  • Conduct audits of training processes and assist in developing evaluation criteria to identify trends and recommend corrective actions.
  • Serve as a resource to clarify policies and procedures for staff.
  • Assist in procedure development and validation to comply with departmental and regulatory standards.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent clinical training.
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) through ASCP or NCA required.

Experience:

  • Minimum of five years as a Medical Laboratory Scientist.
  • Preferred experience in quality assurance, training, education, and competency assessment.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of laboratory methodologies and regulatory requirements including safety, CAP, JCAHO, CLIA, and federal guidelines.
  • Effective management and supervisory skills with the ability to make independent decisions under pressure.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Familiarity with developmental models relevant to adolescent and adult patient populations to guide staff training.
  • Flexibility to work additional hours or shifts as needed.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to operate laboratory equipment while sitting or standing.
  • Moderate walking, standing, sitting, and lifting.
  • Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and occasional toxic substances.
  • Capability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively both independently and in team settings.

This position serves a diverse regional healthcare network in the Southeastern United States, supporting multiple hospital sites and specialty care clinics.
