The University of Texas Permian Basin's College of Engineering welcomes applications for the position of Lab Manager in Civil Engineering

Salary Range

$60,000.00 depending on qualifications

Essential Functions

We are seeking a highly qualified and enthusiastic individual for the Civil Engineering Laboratory Manager position. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the maintenance and daily operations of the laboratories, ensuring a safe and efficient environment for students, staff, and faculty. The candidate will also facilitate instructional and operational needs across departmental labs. The Lab Manager must have a thorough understanding of laboratory instrumentation and safety protocols. Additionally, a deep understanding of laboratory procedures for various civil engineering labs including: Infrastructure Materials, Structural, Geotechnic, and Hydraulics labs is essential, along with experience in the setup, maintenance, and minor repair of lab equipment.

  • Set up and operate a wide range of laboratory equipment used in Civil Engineering labs, including Infrastructure Materials, Structural, Geotechnical, and Hydraulics laboratories.
  • Able to work effectively with students, staff, and faculty.
  • Assist faculties in teaching laboratory courses (when needed may be considered faculty of record).
  • Assist faculties in conducting research experiments.
  • Provide training and supervision of staff and students in use of lab equipment.
  • Maintain the lab space, equipment, instruments, and supplies.
  • Ensure that facilities and equipment are in optimal and proper working condition.
  • Ensure laboratories are in compliance with local, state and federal regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure that certification and training requirements are met for all lab personnel.
  • Know engineering processes related to lab equipment, maintenance, and repair.
  • Perform minor repairs if qualified and as needed.
  • Develop, implement and enforce policies and procedures to support laboratory safety, efficiency and quality control.
  • Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment.
  • Procurement of materials and parts for teaching

Required Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field.

  2. Laboratory management experience at the university level.

  3. Have the knowledge of laboratory procedures, instrumentation, and safety practices.

  4. Ability to work independently.

  5. Excellent communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.

  6. Ability to maintain an organized, clean, and safe working environment.

  7. Ability to perform general maintenance tasks.

  8. Familiarity with Microsoft Office

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Ability to manage laboratories in both areas of Civil and Mechanical engineering.

Additional Information

From the College

The College of Engineering and Sciences is a newly formed College as of 2024. The College offers B.S. in Civil, Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical, and Petroleum Engineering and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering as well as B.S. in Chemistry, Computer Science, Geology, and Mathematics and M.S. in Computer Science and Geology. The Mechanical and Petroleum Engineering Programs are ABET Accredited. Chemical and Electrical Engineering programs are in the process of ABET Accreditation. The College is also home to the Texas Water and Energy Institute and the newly opened Advanced Manufacturing Center. The College is housed in building that opened 2019, with excellent facilities for instructional and curricular activities and research and development. The Civil Engineering Department is the newest department in the College starting in the Fall of 2025. Faculty in this department will be able to shape and direct the future of the Civil Engineering Department in teaching, scholarly activity and service.

Schedule

Generally, the normal work hours for the university are Monday through Thursday, 7:30 - 5:30 pm; Friday, 8:00 am - 12:00 pm with a one-hour lunch. The individual holding this position may need to be available early morning, evening, and on weekends to meet the needs of the department. Hours worked may differ with some departments.

Standard Working Conditions

  1. Able to lift various materials up to 25 pounds on an occasional basis.

  2. Able to bend, crouch, and reach continuously.

  3. Physically able remain seated, frequently to continuously.

  4. Able to remain standing up to 15% of the time.

  5. Possesses dexterity abilities required to perform job duties including extensive keyboard work, operating office equipment, performing filing, and other job-related responsibilities that include extensive wrist and hand movement.

  6. Standard working conditions may differ depending on department and occupation
