Yakima Valley College is one of the oldest community colleges in the state of Washington. Founded in 1928, the college has a long tradition of quality in teaching and in its commitment to students.Yakima Valley College seeks an innovative Chemistry Instructor, who is active and accomplished in their discipline, who has a record of successful teaching or related experience, and who is committed to community college students and their success. This is a full-time, special faculty (non-tenure track) position, with an anticipated start date of September 2025.
Reporting to the Dean of Arts and Sciences, the Chemistry Instructor will demonstrate they have actively experimented with or are professionally interested in interventions and strategies designed to close the achievement gaps for underrepresented students. Additionally, we are seeking a candidate with a record as a successful instructor who demonstrates the strong promise of becoming a contributing member of the Arts and Sciences Division.

JOB PROFILE:
Teach Introductory Chemistry.
Teach GOB sequence for allied health and agriculture students.
Teach the 3-quarter General Chemistry sequence for science majors.
Effectively advise students considering a major in physical science or a medical field.
Maintain current knowledge of academic opportunities, transfer pathways and agreements in the field of science in order to effectively and accurately advise students.
Help students effectively use computers to collect, analyze, and report laboratory data.
Use effective classroom methodologies to teach to a variety of student.
Participate in outcomes assessment of student learning and program effectiveness.
Effectively interact with colleagues, staff, students, administrators, and others of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds and ability.
Place primary emphasis on student learning in the design, delivery, and evaluation of courses.
Demonstrate the ability to use written and oral communication in the classroom and with other professionals.
Display strong commitment to the mission and values of community college education.
Full-time faculty are responsible for teaching 45 load hours per academic year. YVC is based on the quarter system, with Fall, Winter, and Spring terms during the academic year.
Support students academic success by maintaining regular office hours.
Participate as an active member of working committees dealing with instruction, college-wide and department assessment, student matters and/or college related concerns.
YVC offers courses to meet the needs of the students. Courses are offered starting at 7:30 am. Evening and weekend courses are also offered. The Dean of Arts and Sciences assigns course loads with the understanding that the instructor will be available to teach during the course times needed by the students.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Masters degree in Chemistry or related field (Biochemistry, Physical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry).
- Successful teaching experience.
- Commitment to the community college philosophy.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
One year of college level teaching experience.
Experience leading efforts to increase student success in Chemistry, including closing achievement gaps between demographic groups.
Demonstrated ability to adopt teaching methods/styles that support successful learning appropriate to the student population at Yakima Valley College.
Experience using technology and chemical instrumentation, such as Vernier software and probes, FT-IR, GC, UV-Vis, HPLC, Spectrophotometer in a student laboratory setting.
Experience developing curriculum (lecture and laboratory).
Experience with and willingness to incorporate a variety of teaching modalities including online, hybrid, and fully in-person courses.
Willing to lead student research projects during the academic year and/or summer.
