Title: Refinery Chemist - Asphalt
The Opportunity
- Asphalt Chemist at a growth-oriented energy company.
- Perform analytical testing for asphalt product quality control.
- Prepare & maintain analytical apparatus and procedures. Train & qualify lab personnel on these same procedures.
- Support asphalt product research and development of new product formulations.
An Asphalt Binder Chemist evaluates the properties of asphalts, polymers, and/or crudes to develop their suitability for applications in the paving and roofing industries. The Chemist must possess the ability to multi-task and stay on top of tasks in a deadline driven environment, and individuals must display effective time management and organizational skills. The Chemist must take ownership and accountability of work to ensure it is neat, clean, and accurate. Individuals will work on projects and matters of limited complexity in a supported role.
Key activities include:
Will have working knowledge of ASTM and AASHTO procedures and able to perform them with a high degree of accuracy.
Understand how the results affect the operations of the refinery and can communicate this to the necessary people in a profession manner.
Will be available during off hours to take phone calls from operations, marketing and customers as needed. The person may have to work different hours or weekends as the workload demands.
Will provide technical assistance to customers when marketing requests it.
Work in other areas of the laboratory when requested.
Working knowledge of Laboratory Information System
Working knowledge of SDS and common safety procedures
Maintain Procedures & Methods and implement revisions
Train/Qualify/Recertify Lab employees in Asphalt Lab subdivision
Assist with improving & maintaining QA/QC program in conformance to the Asphalt Area Quality Assurance Manual
Develop standards & correlations, develop control charts, review performance and revise practices as necessary, report statistical & apparatus findings and performance weekly, coordinate routine blind sample testing, assist with QA corrective action plans, assist with interlaboratory crosscheck sample sets
Provide technical & maintenance support for apparatus & equipment. Write work orders, when necessary, and follow work
Assist Staff Asphalt Chemist with developing asphalt product formulations, asphalt research, & crude screening
Recommend corrective action for individual or reformulating asphalt blends
Assist Staff Asphalt Chemist with investigating customer inquiries for asphalt product supply
Recover solvents from various asphalt test methods
Prepare mix design samples and temperature-viscosity charts for agencies, construction labs, and customers
Issue product Certificates of Analysis
Assist with alternate crude evaluations
Maintain retain sample inventory

Minimum Qualifications include:
- Bachelor's degree in a science major, preferably Chemistry
- 3 years of AASHTO Asphalt testing experience required
- Quality Assurance and Quality Control experience preferred
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- MS Office; Excel and Word required

Hiring Range:
The hiring range for this position is $97,189 to $145,784, plus 10% discretionary bonus. The candidate selected will be placed according to his/her skills and qualifications in the targeted hiring range of $110,000 to $128,000.
