Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Analyzes liquids, solid and/or gaseous materials, substances or compounds
  • Operates and maintains equipment such as the LECO, analytical balances, pH meters and other laboratory equipment
  • Makes reagents necessary for chemical analysis and recommends purchase of supplies
  • Maintains Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Records test data in the data management system

Additional position information: Some travel may be involved for instrumental analysis training. Also, the incumbent of this position will be required to do some standing during sample analysis. Furthermore, the analyst will be required to stoop, bend and/or lift samples in order to perform sample preparation and sample analysis. Finally, the incumbent will be sitting at a desk to input sample information.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in chemistry, or in a natural, physical, forensic science or a related science field.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must be 18 years of age.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a laboratory setting. Incumbent may be exposed to hazardous materials, substances, or compounds when performing chemical analysis, which may require utilization of safety measures. Field work may be required.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
