Purpose

The Materials Engineer monitors quality control programs and quality assurance testing performed for a project. The Materials Engineer also provides required materials documentation of project records and sub-consultant invoicing. This position requires all necessary effort and time required to meet established deadlines. The Materials Engineer monitors project specific quality assurance testing as well as any soil analysis and soils characteristics. The Materials Engineer also monitors foundation analysis work and development and implementation of concrete and asphalt mix designs. This position may require frequent travel, as well as all necessary effort and time required to meet established deadlines is required.

Responsibilities

Leadership and Direction

  • Receive broad guidance relating to overall key objectives, critical issues, new concepts, and policy matters and general parameters for execution. Receive direction as needed, and especially on highly complex assignments. Independently apply extensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in broad areas of assignments and related fields. Review work produced by staff for quality assurance.

At the Operational and Company Level

  • Assist with the marketing of the firm's capabilities to establish new clients and enhance relationships.
  • Serve as technical specialist and liaison between clients and agencies, subcontractors, and design teams on complex project issues.

Do the Work

  • Use advanced techniques, theory precepts and practices in the materials testing engineering field and related sciences and disciplines.
  • Oversee and coordinate materials inspection for quality assurance and independent assurance sampling and testing for mixtures.
  • Review mixture reports for accuracy and compliance to the contract requirements.
  • Track material inspection, including source certification and the respective documentation.
  • Maintain organized records of materials related documentation.
  • Monitor contractor progress payment to confirm that all work on the project that has been incorporated is in compliance with contract material requirements.
  • Assist field staff with materials issues and general inspection as required.
  • Make design recommendations, adaptations, and modifications.
  • Plan, schedule, conduct, and/or coordinate detailed phases of assigned project work.
  • Perform on-site observations/inspections to confirm compliance with the local building code and project contract documents.
  • Collect samples per company and project requirements.
  • Work closely with other disciplines on multi-discipline projects.
  • Review plans and prepare or review technical specifications, contract documents, and estimates.
  • Assist in recruiting and training younger staff.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering preferred, or commensurate relevant experience.
  • Five or more (5+) years of experience performing multi-discipline special materials inspections and testing.
  • Completed IDOT/QC required courses (Concrete Level I & II, Mixture Aggregate Technician or Aggregate Technician).
  • Experience with asphalt or concrete plant management, a plus.
  • ACI Level I for concrete sampling/testing, or the ability to secure, a plus.
  • Radiation safety training for the use of nuclear density gauges, or the ability to secure.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • IDOT's MISTIC database and Tollway I-MIRS database knowledge required.
  • Familiarity with reading construction plans.

Physical Demands and Working Environment

  • Partially indoor professional office environment which may include bright/dim light, noise, fumes, odors, and traffic.
  • Partially outdoor work environment which may include adverse weather conditions, varying temperatures, excessive noise, and/or potential hazards.
  • Mobility around an office environment.
  • Frequent and prolonged use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
  • Mobility around a job/construction site to include walking, bending, crawling, climbing, squatting, or kneeling and wearing of required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Primarily local travel during the business day, although some out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be required according to the needs of the business.
  • Occasional lifting or carrying up to 20 pounds.
  • Occasional pushing or pulling up to 20 pounds.
  • Occasional reaching outward or above shoulder.
