Job Summary This job is for physics-based modeling of light scattering processes and their ramifications on experimental sensitivity and design of the Cosmic Explorer next generation gravitational-wave observatories. The research is to relate optical surface qualities and stray light baffle designs against infrastructure requirements. Essential Job Duties This job requires: Knowledge of optical simulation tools for the diffuse and coherent propagation of light within long-baseline interferometers. Programming abilities to maintain and document FFT optical simulation code in Matlab or Python programming languages. Ability to collaborate with other Cosmic Explorer members involved with the experiment design process. Development of design requirements documents to establish hardware specifications and guidelines for future development of next generation gravitational-wave detectors. Basic Qualifications PhD in physics or related field. 6 years' experience in optical design or simulation and 3 years' experience in experimental interferometry. Familiarity with mirror coating and polishing specifications. Preferred Qualifications 12 years' experience in optical simulation. Knowledge of numerical methods in computation. Understanding of thermal distortion mechanisms and beam wavefront deterioration due to thermal aberrations. Required Documents CV.
