Overview Medical Laboratory Scientists - Job ID #13197 in Kansas City, Missouri DUTIES: This position is responsible for the completion of laboratory tests in an accurate and timely manner. Performs various phlebotomy techniques if appropriate for location. Performs continuous quality assurance activities by performing quality control testing procedures and evaluation of data, taking necessary actions to correct problems. Performs daily and scheduled preventative maintenance procedures on laboratory instruments. Evaluates specimens for acceptability. Exercises judgement to ascertain the appropriateness of the test orders, the validity of test results and to communicate this information to the physician. Performs highly complex laboratory procedures in a variety of laboratory sections with minimum supervision. Follows standard operating test procedures as outlined in the Procedure Manual. Coordinates and prioritizes work in order to complete within a reasonable time frame. Accurately calculates, transcribes and records test results. Evaluates validity of results to ensure accuracy. Recognizes normal vs. abnormal, communicating and documenting critical values to appropriate caregiver. Conducts routine calibrations and adjustment of equipment as needed. Participates in proficiency testing and laboratory's established competency assessment program. Participates in the evaluation of new techniques and procedures in the laboratory in terms of equipment, method comparisons, and establishment of normal ranges. Maintains general operations of the laboratory. Oversees less skilled laboratory personnel in the performance of their job duties. Participates in training of new Laboratory personnel. Assists in inventory management by following the established procedures of the department. Attends mandatory Hospital and Laboratory in-services. Participates in continuing education workshops and seminars to stay abreast of new techniques, procedures, and instrumentation. Follows established safety procedures for chemical and blood borne pathogen hygiene. Job duties may include disposal of hazardous waste and mandatory hazardous waste management training. Initial hire for evening shifts, but may change depending on staffing needs and with a move to day shift based on seniority. Performs other duties as needed. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, Biomedical Sciences or related field; 10 months clinical laboratory/rotations experience as part of a MLS program; and hold or be eligible for certification (AMT, ASCP or similar) as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS).
