Discovery Lab Technician

Objective

The Discovery Lab Technician is responsible for performing glassware cleaning, ensuring proper disposal of hazardous materials, preparation of reagents, and maintaining inventory of routinely used consumable supplies. The Discovery Lab Technician will also be responsible for assisting with instrumentation maintenance. The lab technician will assist with other tasks as assigned.

Essential Functions

  • Conduct experiments and prepare reagents under the supervision of the Discovery Lab Senior Operations Manager or senior lab staff.
  • Maintain inventory of consumable lab supplies and initiate purchasing request as needed.
  • Maintain chemical inventory and initiate purchasing request as needed.
  • Setup lab apparatus/experiment under the supervision of senior lab personnel.
  • Assist with instrument maintenance and document corrective actions performed.
  • Participate in recommendations on instrument acquisitions to management.
  • Ensuring incoming packages are routed to the correct personnel.
  • Prepare sample packages for shipment to domestic and international collaborators.

Education/Experience

  • Associate degree or bachelor's degree (preferably in the scientific field), plus two years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in maintaining contaminant free labware used in synthesis and compound purification.
  • Experience with handling chemical and regulated waste and familiar with regulations that govern disposal of such waste.
  • Experience in a fast paced and dynamic chemical synthesis lab.
  • Experience handling hazardous chemicals safely with the proper PPE.

Knowledge / Skill / Ability

  • Willingness and ability to work with chemicals and radioisotopes in a safe manner.
  • Ability to handle multiple duties simultaneously and complete work in a timely manner in a dynamic environment.
  • Self-motivated and resourceful.
  • Comfort with various computer operating systems and software applications.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Able to adapt to guidance and respond positively to feedback.

  • Must be willing to work in a facility producing radioactive materials and requiring all employees to participate in safety programs designed to minimize potential and/or actual exposure levels.
  • Must be able to work outside of regular work hours, including off shift, weekend, and holiday work as business needs require.
  • May be required to sit or stand for long periods of 8+ hours a day while performing duties.
  • Occasional kneeling, crouching, twisting the upper body, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, or reaching may be required.
  • Must possess good hand-eye coordination; close attention to detail is required.
  • Must be able to work indoors and outdoors with exposure to mechanical/moving parts, hazards including radioactive, corrosive, flammable and toxic material, dust, dirt, odors, and irritants.
  • Must be willing to wear a variety of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including eye and hearing protection, as needed.
  • Willingness to complete safety training within allotted timeframes, and work in a team-based environment.
