A full time Postdoctoral Fellow/PhD-trained Scientific Associate position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Giuseppe Giannotti, in the Department of Integrative Physiology and Neuroscience (IPN) at Washington State University (WSU) in Pullman, WA.

We are seeking highly motivated postdoctoral fellows to join our NIH-funded research program investigating the neurobiological overlap between opioid withdrawal and relapse. Our work focuses on mapping neuronal circuits and engrams that encode withdrawal states and assessing their contribution to heroin-seeking behavior using established preclinical models of opioid use disorder. The research integrates a range of techniques, including in vivo and ex vivo optogenetics, fiber photometry, slice electrophysiology, immunohistochemistry, and heroin self-administration. Fellows will receive comprehensive technical and conceptual training tailored to the project, along with robust mentorship in developing independent research directions and competitive extramural funding proposals. Candidates with demonstrated experience in rodent behavioral models, sterile surgical techniques, electrophysiology, fiber photometry, or Python-based data analysis will be particularly competitive.

The Department of Integrative Physiology and Neuroscience ( is an academic unit in the Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine. International neuroscience faculty within the department form highly collaborative research units that study substance abuse, ingestive behavior, stress, and sleep neurobiology. Thus, the candidate will have ample opportunities for collaboration and co-mentoring. Postdocs can compete for both intramural and external research grants. Furthermore, the department offers baccalaureate and doctoral degree programs in Neuroscience, in addition to postdoctoral training. The department is housed in an award-winning, ultra-modern BSL-2 research facility on the Pullman campus of Washington State University, and it is equipped with state-of-the-art microscopy, imaging, electrophysiology, cell biology, and behavioral testing equipment. Pullman is a college town located in the heart of the Palouse, on the Southeast border of Washington State, with easy access to innumerable outdoor recreation opportunities.
