Laboratory Technician (Full-Time)

Under the general supervision of the Chief Chemist, collects in-plant samples and performs technical duties related to the analysis of samples associated with the treatment of sewage at the Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP). MAJOR TASKS:
  • Carries out sampling programs associated with sewage treatment.
  • Prepares and ships samples for external laboratory analysis.
  • Prepares, documents and labels standard solutions and reagents.
  • Sets up and ensures that samplers and laboratory instrumentation is regularly calibrated and maintained in good operating condition.
  • Carries out the subsequent analysis according to established analytical procedures.
  • Calculates the results with reference to such aspects as quality control and sample dilution.
  • Records and maintains records of the analytical results and quality control standards on the appropriate reports.
  • Ensures that the laboratory equipment and glassware are kept clean and organized.
  • Reports any unusual situation or condition to the supervisor.
  • Provides assistance to Environmental Inspector as assigned.
  • Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: Education/Experience:
  • College diploma in environmental technology or chemical laboratory technology; or
  • Equivalent three years’ applied science program together with at least two years’ laboratory-related work experience; or
  • University degree in chemistry and one year laboratory-related experience.
Skills/Abilities:
  • Must be capable of performing precise, accurate chemical analysis on a wide range of environmental samples associated with the treatment of sewage;
  • Must be able to read and interpret analytical procedures and instruction manuals;
  • Must be competent within the meaning of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, as amended;
  • Must be reliable and capable of performing routine work with a minimum of supervision;
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class “G” Ontario Drivers Licence, or equivalent
  • Must meet the definition of a competent driver as defined by the Corporation
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Must attain and maintain First Aid Certification.
  • Must remain a competent driver as defined by the Corporation
  • May be required to provide a successful driver’s record (uncertified)
  • Must undergo a successful Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC)
