Your impact
A person working as Senior Chemist, performs analytical testwork to support Newmont global operations with prescribed procedures independently under minimal supervision. The employee in this classification is responsible for performing a broad range of analytical procedures and tasks, including some automated instrumentation. Additionally, the Senior Chemist will provide guidance and mentorship to other Chemists. This Sr. Chemist will perform other duties as directed and needed by the company.

As part of our team you will
- The Senior Chemist will direct the work of junior chemists, laboratory technicians, interns, and/or contingent employees in standard and routine analytical techniques.
- Communicate expectations and status of current workload and priorities to all stakeholders.
- Routine upkeep, editing, and writing of analytical SOPs and JSAs.
- Ability to multitask and move between laboratory tasks.
- Use of LIMS for logging samples, data entry, and data reporting.
- Capable of ordering and keeping track of chemical inventory for the laboratory.
- Knowledge of inorganic water analysis instrumentation for ion chromatography, nutrient flow injection analyses, and cyanide analyses
- Responsible for the planning, scheduling, and execution of analytical projects providing quality and timely completion of technical analytical reports and allocation of time.
- Capable of training/managing manual wet-chemistry techniques, gold and copper extractions, and multi-element acid digestions.
- Understanding of Fire Assay Lab; deep understanding of process, workflow, and sample types and related test variants.
- Proficient in the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of automated instrumentation: LECO Combustion Analyzers, Mercury by Combustion, Mercury by Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption, Auto-Titrators.
- Proficient in operation, basic maintenance, basic troubleshooting of Microwave Plasma Atomic Emissions Spectrometer (MP-AES).
- Proficient in operation, basic maintenance, basic troubleshooting of ICP-Optical Emissions Spectrometer (OES).
- Proficient in operation, basic maintenance, basic troubleshooting of ICP-Mass Spectrometer (MS).
- Responsible for QA/QC for analytical results. Utilizes round robin results from multiple sources to ensure quality results are being reported out and corrective actions are implemented if needed.
- Leads the procurement of existing technologies needed in the analytical laboratory to replace or improve current instrumentation.
- Leads the procurement of new technologies to enhance the capabilities in the analytical department.
- Act as Project Coordinator for a variety of different projects involving several other teams and departments across different fields.
- Lead method development opportunities related to existing technologies and analytical analyses.
- Directly involved in R&D projects with potential to lead. Contributes to the execution of projects by providing subject matter expertise and/or by use of analytical tools and analyses.
- Delivers value to the analytical department by providing new modes of analyses.
Prerequisites for success in this role
- Bachelor's Degree/Master Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field is required.
- Must possess basic computer skills such as ability to enter data into a database and work with common spreadsheet and word processing programs such as Excel or MS Word
- Capable of solving basic mathematical problems.
- Ability to follow and deliver instructions and work in a team environment.
- Capable of understanding flow sheets, mechanical drawings and written procedures.
- Working knowledge of OSHA and MSHA regulatory issues are also required.
- Working knowledge of chemical inventory system management.
- Participates in workshops, conferences, and any educational courses directly related to analytical department and/or other departments of the laboratory that are relevant to position.
- Write technical papers and presents on topics relating to technologies housed in the analytical department at conferences, workshops, and/or Newmont events (technical vignettes, monthly meetings).
- 7-10 years' work experience in chemistry is necessary with required degree.
- 7-10 years' experience with in a laboratory-testing environment is preferred.
Your work environment
- The position works on-site at Newmont's Malozemoff Technical Facility in Englewood, CO.
- Maintains focus with repetitive tasks lasting 6-9 hours per day.
- Work with sample preparation equipment.
- Work with laboratory standard chemicals, chemicals awareness is a must.
- Wear personal protective equipment including steel toe shoes, safety glasses, respirator, earplugs, and gloves to perform duties safely.
- Willingness to put in extra hours as projects and priorities dictate.

The salary range offered for this overtime-eligible role is USD $34-40/hour. The salary range is tied to the Colorado market for jobs performed in Colorado. The salary offer to the successful candidate will be based on job-related education, training, and/or experience.
