Laboratory Technician - Police Crime Laboratory

The Phoenix Crime Laboratory currently has three vacancies for Laboratory Technician, which include the Controlled Substances, Evidence Screening Section and a floating position. There may be additional vacancies in other sections in the future. Laboratory Technicians in the Police Department's Laboratory Services Bureau assist Forensic Scientists and Crime Scene Specialists in laboratory analysis; prepare chemical reagents; maintain laboratory areas; inventory, order, distribute, and replenish laboratory supplies; receive, log, and inventory physical evidence using a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS); assist in the maintenance of instruments/equipment; prepare discovery information; perform various analytical processes; and perform work as requested.

Location: Phoenix Police Department Crime Laboratory 621 W. Washington, Phoenix, AZ 85003.

Work shift: Monday - Friday, 5/8 or 4/10 schedule as determined by the Forensic Science Section Supervisor.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

• Strong work ethic, excellent attention to detail, good communication skills, and the ability to maintain effective working relationships with others in the work group.
• Participated in internships, volunteer work, extra studies, or has academic honors.
• Knowledge of a laboratory quality system and related policies and procedures.

SALARY

Pay Range: $21.02 - $34.25 per hour.

Hiring Range: $21.02 - $25.56 per hour.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Three years of standard laboratory tests or instrumental analyses in a public health, crime laboratory, or utility chemical laboratory;
• Including courses in chemistry, bacteriology, or a related field.
• Other combinations of experience and education which meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
• All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
• Positions in the Police Department must meet the background standards that are appropriate to non-sworn positions. The general factors for disqualification are listed here.
• Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

• Bachelor's degree in chemistry, microbiology, environmental sciences or closely related field.
• Experience in a forensic or environmental chemical or an education environment laboratory.
• Experience with wet Chemistry analyses, including Chemical Oxygen Demand, Total Solids, Volatile Solids, Total Suspended Solids, Total Dissolved Solids, Alkalinity, Ammonia, Sulfides, Titrations, and Specific Gravity.
• Experience with basic maintenance on laboratory instruments and equipment as needed.
• Experience with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.).
• Experience with sample extractions and organic chemical analyses.
