Job Description

To perform specialized and routine standardized chemical and biological laboratory examinations and procedures; perform related work.

The successful candidate will support the effective operation and maintenance of the Treasure Valley Anatomy & Physiology Laboratories by assisting staff and overseeing day-to-day laboratory functions. This includes coordinating schedules and providing guidance to laboratory assistants, student employees, and volunteers; operating and maintaining laboratory equipment; and ensuring the safe handling and disposal of chemicals and bio-hazardous materials in compliance with university policies and regulatory standards. The position also involves distributing, tracking, and assisting with the procurement of laboratory supplies; preparing for gross and virtual anatomy lab sessions; and supporting the care, preparation, and maintenance of anatomical donor specimens. Additional responsibilities include responding to general inquiries about lab procedures, supporting bioskills events and professional education sessions, and working independently on assigned laboratory projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintaining cleanliness, organization, and professional appearance of laboratory facilities.
  • Ensuring proper care, maintenance, and respectful handling of human anatomical specimens.
  • Maintaining lab safety and security protocols and monitoring lab access.
  • Managing schedules including time station entries. and providing guidance and task direction for laboratory assistants, students, and/or volunteers as needed.
  • Maintaining accurate inventory of chemicals, lab supplies, and equipment.
  • Preparing, mixing, and appropriately labeling chemical solutions for lab use.
  • Ensuring accurate labeling and documentation for the receipt and shipping of samples and waste.
  • Supporting the setup, restoration, and facilitation of gross and virtual anatomy labs and events.
  • Assisting with anatomical donor intake, discharge, and associated documentation.
  • Entering data and maintaining logs related to lab procedures, specimen use, and inventory.
  • Demonstrating working knowledge of rules and regulations that govern the operation of the anatomy laboratory.
  • Providing logistical support to ISU, ICOM, and external faculty, staff, and students utilizing the anatomy lab.
  • Maintaining lab tools, dissection equipment, and work areas in compliance with ISU policies.
  • Operating and maintaining standard lab equipment, including saws and surgical tools.
  • Managing paper and electronic records, reports, and correspondence pertaining to the labs.
  • Improving skills in utilizing virtual lab resources (Anatomage, Visible Body etc.).
  • Responding to inquiries regarding laboratory procedures, operational policies, and safety guidelines.
  • Regularly utilizing Mac and Windows computers and standard office/lab software.
  • Assisting with bioskills training events and professional education sessions as needed.
  • Contributing to educational efforts by expanding anatomical knowledge and assisting with lab instruction when appropriate.
  • Developing dissection skills and/or supporting student and peer dissections as needed.
  • Improving proficiency in 3D printing technologies and other emerging lab resources.
  • Performing other duties as assigned in support of TVAPL and its mission.

Minimum Qualifications

Good knowledge of:

  • Laboratory terminology, equipment, materials, and procedures, and the fundamental laboratory methods relating to chemistry or biology.

Experience:

  • Performing standardized laboratory tests according to prescribed procedures.
  • Calculating and recording test results.
  • Maintaining a clean, sterile, and safe laboratory environment.

Supplemental Information

Incumbents in these positions work under the following conditions:

  • Incumbents work with toxic, volatile, and corrosive chemicals, carcinogenic substances and potentially pathogenic organisms.
  • Incumbents are required to stand approximately six hours a day.
  • Incumbents may be required to have a vaccination for infectious diseases.

ISU minimum for this classification is $17.25/hour.
