Job Title: Metallurgical Engineer - Project Engineer

Job Description

This Metallurgical Engineer role is part of a dynamic R&D team located at the Mossville Tech Center in Illinois. The team is committed to enhancing the performance and cost-efficiency of ferrous metals, including steel and iron, making them stronger, more cost-effective, and apt for use in heavy equipment. The role involves coordinating with lab and shop teams to plan, track experiments, analyze results, and report findings. It includes a combination of office tasks such as report writing and meetings, and time in labs and testing areas.

Responsibilities

  • Support multiple engineers on R&D projects related to steel, cast iron, and heat treatment.
  • Coordinate experimental trials with the in-house heat treat shop.
  • Work with the metallurgical lab to plan, track, and analyze tests.
  • Summarize findings and present results in team meetings or reports.
  • Conduct wear testing following safety procedures and maintain related equipment.
  • Track and manage inventory of testing materials and consumables.
  • Ensure clear documentation and traceability of all samples and test results.
  • Communicate effectively with engineers and internal stakeholders.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science & Engineering.
  • Familiarity with heat treatment, steel casting, or foundry processes.
  • Experience in metallurgical lab testing (e.g., microhardness, optical microstructure, Charpy impact, SEM).
  • Strong analytical and detail-oriented mindset.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and work independently.
  • Comfortable working in both office and shop environments.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365, JMatPro.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Internship or industry experience in heat treatment, foundry, or steelmaking.
  • Experience with wear testing or maintaining lab/testing equipment.
  • Familiarity with ImageJ or other analytical imaging software.
  • Exposure to simulation tools like JMatPro.
  • Experience in automotive or similar industries.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $35.00/hr.
