The Fuel Quality Section of the Standards Division in the N.C. Dept. of Agriculture & Consumer Service is the regulatory agent in the state responsible for enforcing motor fuel (gasoline and diesel), heating fuel (kerosene and fuel oil) and motor oil quality standards. Inspections are primarily of those products available for sale to the public, but also can include those used in business, commercial or private applications. The section also responds to consumer complaints or industry requests concerning fuel quality. This position is responsible for performing a variety of manual and automated instrumental chemical analyses used to verify the required composition of fuel samples, such as gasoline, diesel fuel, kerosene and motor oil, to ensure they meet the specifications outlined in the Gasoline and Oil Inspection Law, Chapter 119, N.C. General Statutes, and the Rules and Regulations of the North Carolina Gasoline and Oil Inspection Board, Chapter 42, North Carolina Administrative Code. These regulations govern the sale of motor fuels with respect to quality standards and distributor's specification. This person is responsible for performing analytical procedures requiring considerable theoretical knowledge and analytical expertise in organic, inorganic and physical chemistry. In addition, the work requires skill in maintaining testing equipment and repairing instruments with assistance from the instrument company service technicians as required.
