Job Summary

The Marathon Martinez Renewable Facility located in Martinez, CA has an opening for a Advanced Refining Laboratory Chemist . The Advanced Chemist serves as the analytical/technical expert in laboratory methods and instruments to support safe, reliable, and compliant laboratory and refinery operations. Duties will include developing and validating test methods, maintenance, repair and troubleshooting of lab instrumentation, ensure laboratory data is valid and compliant with internal/external rules and regulations, training of lab personnel, and lead analytical investigations such as special samples or projects. The position requires strong analytical background, interpersonal skills, and the ability to collaborate across departments. The available schedule for the position are 9/80 and after hours calls are required on average several times a month. Business hours are typically: 7 AM - 4:00 PM.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide expert technical support to ensure laboratory complies with ASTM or other standard methods for testing as well as ASTM D6299/D6792 for laboratory SQC (statistical quality control) requirements such as developing and writing SOPs, monitoring, and maintaining SQC charts in QCPlus and reviewing lab data for abnormalities, trends, or leading indicators.

  • Ownership of specified analytical area in the lab to support daily critical testing, which includes performing calibrations, maintenance, repair and troubleshooting of test methods and instruments, researching, and implementing new analytical test methods including modifying methods when appropriate, validating new equipment

  • Respond to test or instrument issues during off-hours as needed.

  • Act as liaison to the lab for operations area team and leads non-routine analysis on products and intermediates for investigative purposes.

  • Help coordinate building maintenance activities, material ordering, instrument storage, and other general lab needs.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Education, Experience and Skills:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have a Bachelors Degree in Chemistry or Science related discipline with 4 college chemistry classes and 2 college chemistry labs.

  • Must have at least 5 years of experience as a Chemist in a refinery, petro-chemical, renewables, or other related industries such as 3rd party inspection labs .

  • Must be proficient in Microsoft: Word, Excel, and Outlook.

  • Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery (respirator), be able to physically perform all tasks in the field and take hair drug test and physical.

  • Must have a clean and valid drivers license. (MPC determines valid status.)

  • Must be able to obtain a TWIC card.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US without the need for future VISA sponsorship.

  • Travel Requirement is 5% or less.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 10 plus years of experience as a chemist in a refinery, petro-chemical, renewables, or other related industries such as 3rd party inspection labs.

  • Experience in Gas C hromatography (GC ) including, troubleshooting and calibrations is preferred.

  • Experience in LIMS, Chemstation or other Lab related computer programs is preferred.

  • Experience with Statistical Quality Control (SQC) is preferred.
