Job purpose

Responsible for leadership, planning, development and delivery of routine Analytical Services at the Bishop OQ Chemicals manufacturing facility. Quality Control responsibilities include routine and non-routine testing and analysis of in-process and finished product samples. Serves as coordinator for site-wide quality assurance programs and initiatives. Develops and supports analytical testing methods and schemes for the process units and lab.

The position will act in accordance with the Group's Mission, Vision, Values & Strategies, as well as, policies, guidelines and international standards, supported by an IT Technology platform, HSE standards, and best international practices in consonance with national objectives.

Main tasks and responsibilities

  • Responsible for Laboratory Analysts, related laboratory facilities and resources
  • Coordinate with LIMS Specialist to ensure viability and operation of LIMS including interfaces to SAP, DCS, etc.
  • Coordinate site-wide Quality Management Systems (Halal, Kosher, various ISO certifications)
  • Ensure maintenance and upgrades of laboratory technology, instruments, equipment and facilities.
  • Resolve instrument and method issues and ensure adequate precision and accuracy utilizing SPC, calibrations, standardizations, statistical problem solving techniques, method validations and complex analytical methodologies.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of all instrumentation, develop procedures and conduct training on instrumentation and techniques.
  • Develop staff, measure, control and report on lab productivity & effectiveness including KPIs and the Performance Management System
  • Coordinate site-wide response to customer complaints, quality issues and analytical challenges
  • Disseminate new knowledge and techniques in support of the analytical methodologies.
  • Maintain laboratory procedures, records and documentation including raw materials specifications and the Chemical Hygiene Plan
  • Participate in Management of Change process to ensure elements of ISO standards are maintained.
  • Under OSHA lab standard, assigned as chemical hygiene officer, coordinate annual review of plan and ensure all requirements are met.
  • Maintain and document laboratory chemical inventory (DOT precursor inventory) and coordinate external disposal of hazardous materials with HSE.
  • Retain DOT shipper certification as required to ship by air and ground transport.

Education requirements

  • BS in Chemistry

Background and experience

Required:

  • Minimum 3 years of routine analytical chemistry experience in the petrochemical industry
  • Demonstrated method development and problem solving of instrumental and wet chemical analyses for routine laboratories (GC, IC, AA, Karl Fischer, BOD, UV, titrations, physical properties)
  • Team leadership experience
  • ISO 9001 and 14001 knowledge

  • Strong interpersonal and oral and written communication skills to work effectively with a wide variety of individuals including external customers, professional peers, salaried and hourly personnel
  • Independent thinking, strong decision-making and problem solving skills to evaluate and solve problems, make sound recommendations and collaborate with peers across the company
  • Experience with laboratory safety protocols including safe handling and disposal of chemical waste and hazardous chemicals and to implement effective protocols for waste disposal in the lab personnel.
