We are looking for a Senior Analytical Scientist to join our Green Metals Team in the Greater Boston Area, Massachusetts, USA.

In Outokumpu's Green Metals Team, we aim to leverage the best available avenues in both state of the art technologies and emerging disruptive innovations to establish a new paradigm in environmentally sustainable metals production. Our scientific and engineering efforts are experimentally focused on inventing and validating innovative solutions for decarbonization and new product development in extractive and chemical metallurgy. We are seeking a decidedly motivated analytical scientist with a passion for hands on discovery to join our Team. Together, we will collaboratively address technical challenges in ferroalloy and stainless steel manufacturing. As a member of our Team, you will be key part of our effort to design, demonstrate, and implement new mineral treatment and metal smelting processes for a range of materials and applications.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • M.S. degree from an accredited college or university or equivalent experience in one of the following areas: chemistry, metallurgy, materials science, mining engineering, geology, or a related field
  • 5+ years of experience in SEM/EDS analysis, EPMA/WDS analysis, optical microscopy, or related analytical methods
  • Creativity and a strong desire to innovate in the metals industry

We desire candidates with some cross section of these skills and proficiencies:

  • Safe laboratory practices and chemical hygiene
  • Strong leadership, organization, collaboration, and communication skills
  • Familiarity with the chemistry of minerals, slags, mattes, and metals
  • Knowledge of the benefits and drawback of different approaches for phase and compositional analysis of mineral, slag, matte, and metallurgical samples
  • Mounting, grinding, and polishing of mineral, slag, matte, and metallurgical samples
  • Optical microscope setup, operation, and maintenance
  • SEM/EDS setup, operation, and maintenance
  • EPMA/WDS setup, operation, and maintenance
  • Microsoft office
  • Statistical methods for data analysis

Your role would include:

  • Selecting appropriate methods for quantitative and qualitative analysis of mineral, slag, matte, and metallurgical samples
  • Setup and maintenance of analytical tools and equipment
  • Preparation of material samples for various analytical methods
  • Conducting optical, SEM/EDS, and similar analytical methods for mineral, slag, matte, and metallurgical samples
  • Coordinating chemical analysis of samples to be completed by external partners
  • Analysis, organization, and reporting of chemical results obtained through various methods, including SEM/EDS, EPMA/WDS, XRD, XRF, ICP, and/or LECO
  • Collaborating with science and engineering team members for establishment of best laboratory, engineering, and operational practices
  • Communicating your results with members of the Green Metals Team and to other research and development groups within Outokumpu

Salary range: USD.101,900 - 140,100
