The University of Georgia invites applications for a Post-doctoral Research Associate to support cultural resource management and historic preservation initiatives at Fort Benning, Georgia. This 12-month, full-time position will be housed within the Laboratory of Archaeology and will collaborate closely with the Carl Vinson Institute of Government and the Georgia Museum of Natural History.
The Post Doctoral Research Associate's primary responsibilities will include updating Fort Benning's Cultural Resource Management Plan in compliance with Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act and Army regulations, as well as contributing to the documentation and evaluation of archaeological and historic properties. Additional duties include assisting with the development of interpretive materials for Fort Benning, general laboratory and archaeological field process and procedures, developing and maintaining a research program in southeastern archaeology.
Ideal candidates will have archaeological field experience and demonstrated knowledge of historic preservation practices, including architectural surveys, building assessments, and historic resource inventories. Familiarity with southeastern U.S. cultural resource management is preferred, but candidates with relevant experience from other regions are encouraged to apply.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Section 106 and 110 Compliance
- Familiarity with National Register of Historic Places eligibility determinations
- Experience developing interpretive materials for public audiences
- Supervisory experience (e.g., graduate student mentoring or field project management)
Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification in Position
- Ph.D. in Anthropology, Archaeology, or Historic Preservation at time of appointment
- Demonstrated proficiency in ArcGIS
- Knowledge of environmental modeling relevant to archaeological or preservation planning
- Familiarity with state archaeological site file datasets

- Primary work location: Athens, GA (UGA Laboratory of Archaeology)
- Routine travel to Fort Benning, GA required
- Work in field conditions typical of archaeological and historic preservation surveys
