  • Waltham, Massachusetts
  • Full Time

Mercy BioAnalytics, Inc. is a pre-commercial biotechnology company committed to reducing suffering and saving lives through the early detection of cancer. We are working to solve one of the hardest problems in modern oncology: Can we detect cancer in the blood at its earliest stages, and can we do so in a way that is accessible to all those who need it?

We are looking for a Senior Research Associate to join our team. This individual will be tasked with the design, execution, and analysis of experiments to drive early development of our cancer screening test portfolio. This role will include assay optimization, analyte and reagent characterization, and novel assay development. Candidates for this position must enjoy working for a fast-paced, cutting-edge company and demonstrate exemplary team capabilities and a passion for contributing to our life-saving mission.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, execute and analyze scientific experiments to support novel immunoassay development

  • Leverage platforms including our proprietary Mercy Halo assay, ELISA, flow cytometry and western blot to support early development activities including biomarker characterization and reagent screening / optimization

  • Execute the Mercy Halo assay in large clinical studies, small-scale optimization studies, and conduct other associated experiments

  • Work within cross-functional teams to support research and development efforts across the organization and with external collaborators

  • Perform routine laboratory duties, such as preparing reagents, maintaining laboratory equipment, and keeping the laboratory clean and organized consistent with 5S principles

  • Develop and maintain good laboratory practices to govern the activities within the laboratory

  • Help write and review technical protocols, and standard operating procedures, as well as maintain accurate records of experiments in line with Quality Management System requirements

  • Actively monitor and engage the research being performed in other groups at Mercy to minimize redundancy and maximize opportunities for synergy

  • Participate in internal scientific meetings to discuss project progress, review data, and identify assay optimization opportunities

  • Remain current with the liquid biopsy and early cancer detection literature

  • Actively participate in the ideation of improved methods, workflows, and reagent manufacturing processes

  • Communicate regularly with supervisor and broader early development team to relay experiment results and data analysis

Requirements:

  • BSc/MS life science degree

  • Minimum 2+ years of laboratory experience in assay or product development in a biotech or pharma setting is required

  • Proficiency with standard cellular and molecular biology techniques including gel electrophoresis, western blot, ELISA, flow cytometry, chromatography (size exclusion, ion-exchange), and qPCR is required

  • Proficiency with protein bioconjugation techniques and bioconjugate purification methods is a plus

  • Experience with automated liquid handling preferred

  • Experience with next-gen sequencing preferred

  • Proficiency in collecting and accurately documenting experimental procedures and results. Familiarity with electronic lab notebook (ELN) or laboratory information management systems (LIMS) preferred

  • Proficiency in software applications like Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and GraphPad Prism is required

  • Ability to follow established controlled documentation with strict attention to detail and collaborate effectively and efficiently with other team members is essential
