ROLE

The entry-level R&D Chemists main role will be the non-routine chemical and/or physical analysis of raw materials and finished floor covering solutions by utilizing established test methods such as ASTM, ISO or internal protocols. There will also be emphasis on novel method development as needed to support future endeavors of Tarkett. Another area of necessity will be using various physical, chemical & software-driven applications to develop intelligent solutions to testing, monitoring and grading of laboratory samples.

Tasks

  • Perform routine & non-routine analysis of raw materials, intermediates and finished products in accordance with ASTM, ISO protocols and internal protocols for existing and future flooring and adhesive categories.

  • Assist in development of internal test protocols specifically targeting product performance in normal and adverse installation environments.

  • Perform physical property testing in accordance with established ASTM, ISO methods for products manufactured by Tarkett as well as benchmarking competitors products for different types of flooring and adhesive solutions.

  • Develop software application methods to assist analysis of applicable products or product environments.

  • Analyze and extract data from experiments to assist in writing technical briefs and/or reports.

  • Perform tasks associated with maintaining a functional laboratory which may include safely lifting of heavy objects, cutting material from large rolls and other physically-demanding tasks.

  • Follow all World Class Manufacturing safety protocols using PPE appropriate for the given task.

  • Maintain a clean, organized working environment.

  • Keep careful, accurate and organized records.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science in Chemistry (preferred) with 2 to 5 years of experience in an industrial testing environment.

  • Analytical proficiency preferred.

  • Experience in physical applications of chemistry related to flooring and adhesive systems.

  • Fundamental understanding of basic statistical concepts and applications.

Other Qualifications:

  • Repetitive, physically demanding tasks including but not limited to heavy lifting (50lbs) & cutting flooring samples.

  • Microsoft Office 365 suite, especially Excel.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and desire to work in a team-focused environment.

  • Excellent observation skills & very detail-oriented.

  • Creative thinker that can work independently to accomplish tasks.

  • Hands-on experience with Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry; Infra-red spectroscopy; microscopy; tensile trength & compression testing.

  • Fundamental understanding and application of statistical analysis in a laboratory environment.
