Job Description

This role involves the purification of organic chemicals using distillation techniques and related support systems. The position requires setting up and adjusting distillation equipment, operating heating, cooling, vacuum, and pressure systems, and using analytical equipment to assess the quality of distillation cuts and final products. The chemist will transport, weigh, mix, and pump chemical materials, monitor process parameters to ensure product quality, yields, and lot consistency, and ensure proper care, safety, maintenance, and usage of technology, equipment, and systems. You may serve as a technical resource for Distillation Technicians and must maintain all necessary production, safety, inventory, training, and other records and logs, complying with environmental and safety policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret results with supervision.
  • Transport, weigh, mix, and pump chemical materials.
  • Monitor process parameters to ensure product quality, yields, and lot consistency.
  • Ensure proper care, safety, maintenance, and usage of technology, equipment, and systems.
  • Serve as a technical resource for Distillation Technician.
  • Maintain production, safety, inventory, training, and other records and logs.
  • Comply with all environmental and safety policies and procedures.
Essential Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or related field.
  • Knowledge of distillation and analytical chemistry principles and techniques.
  • One to five years experience in distillation.
  • Ability to use metric and U.S. standards of weights and measures.
  • Skill in the operation of distillation and support equipment.
  • Knowledge of piping and valve operations to control processes.
  • Ability to conduct gas chromatographic analyses and interpret results.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Previous experience working in a chemical laboratory preferred.
  • Knowledge of fragrance and organic chemistry.
  • Ability to evaluate materials by odor.
Work Environment

The position follows a 2nd shift schedule, Monday through Friday, from 2:30pm to 11:00pm. Training may be required on an alternative shift. The work environment involves potential exposure to toxic chemicals, hazardous materials and wastes, fumes, unpleasant odors, and physical risks, requiring adherence to safety precautions and training. Physical effort includes handling containers using physical or mechanical means, moving 55-gallon drums weighing up to 700 lbs, lifting 5-gallon containers of liquids or powders equal to 44 lbs, using ladders, climbing stairs, and standing or walking for more than 4 hours per day. Training requirements include interactive online safety training such as OSHA HAZCOM, PPE, HAZWOPER, Fall Protection, and Respirator Protection, as well as classroom training on emergency evacuation procedures, fire extinguisher use, chemical hygiene plan, RCRA hazardous material handling, and respirator training. The dress code includes a company-provided uniform, steel-toed boots, and a respirator mask.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $56000.00 - $61000.00/yr.
