Job Summary

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), Hawaii Institute of Geophysics and Planetology (HIGP), located in Honolulu, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $6,250 - $9,000/Mon.

DUTIES: Leads research and operational activities in advanced manufacturing (AM) and coordinates the management of specialized instrumentation within the Hawaii Initiative for Advanced Materials and Manufacturing (HIAMM). Focuses on developing and optimizing additive manufacturing techniques, particularly printing-based methods for functional materials and device fabrication. Develops and optimizes custom inks for Direct Ink Writing (DIW) and other additive manufacturing methods. Designs and implements advanced manufacturing strategies for fabricating devices and materials, including conductive circuits, sorption filters, and catalytic layers. Oversees operations of HIAMM instrumentation core, including user training, safety compliance, billing, procurement, reporting, and technical support. Coordinates AM-related research efforts across multiple HIAMM projects and collaborates with both on-campus and off-campus research partners. Prepares technical and administrative reports detailing AM activities, instrumentation core usage, safety logs, and training records. Contributes to research publications, funding proposals, and dissemination of results at conferences and meetings. Conducts independent or collaborative research aligned with HIMaR goals. May oversee graduate students and research assistants.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: PhD from an accredited college or university in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field.

EXPERIENCE: Two to four (2-4) years of experience in advanced manufacturing, materials research, or related areas. Demonstrated expertise in additive manufacturing techniques (e.g., DIW, extrusion printing), ink formulation for functional materials, and device fabrication.

KNOWLEDGE: Familiarity with instrumentation lab management, including safety protocols, procurement, and user training.

ABILITIES & SKILLS: Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills. Ability to manage complex lab infrastructure and coordinate multi-group research projects. Proven track record of technical writing and scientific publication. Ability to troubleshoot AM equipment and collaborate effectively with diverse teams. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience in device prototyping for sensors, catalysts, or environmental applications. Familiarity with lithographic methods (e.g., soft or photolithography). Experience with materials characterization tools, such as electron microscopy, profilometry, Raman, or X-ray methods.
