The Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN) at BNL is seeking an exceptional Research Staff to lead research on studying material properties that are relevant to quantum materials including superconducting thin-films and 2D heterostructures, at milliKelvin (mK) temperature. You will commission a new mK scanning probe microscope to study micro-spectroscopy on quantum materials and devices, including superconducting qubits and microwave resonators. You will be primarily stationed at the Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN), working under the supervision of Dario Stacchiola. You will be involved in close collaborations with CFN staff and the user community associated with CFN's QPress and leading experimental groups in C2QA for material properties and device performance measurements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • You will lead the acquisition and commissioning of a milliKelvin scanning probe microscope at the CFN.

  • You will lead a research program on quantum material properties at milliKelvin temperatures;

  • You will lead study on high frequency spectro-microscopy of the constituent materials of quantum circuits, including superconducting qubits and microwave resonators.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • You earned a Ph.D. in an appropriate discipline (e.g., Physics or Electrical Engineering) and have 2 years additional post-doc experience;

  • You are experienced with low temperature measurements at low temperature;

  • You have a strong knowledge of superconductivity and quantum material science.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • You work effectively in a collaborative team to tackle challenging scientific problems;

  • You can work independently within the team;

  • You communicate effectively, both verbally and through writing;

  • You have a strong knowledge on the principle and instrumentation for high-frequency spectroscopy;

  • You have knowledge on scanning probe microscopy at low temperatures.

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $103650 - $130000 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
