POSITION DESCRIPTION The Medical Laboratory Manager oversees and manages all aspects of laboratory operations, including supervising personnel, ensuring regulatory compliance, maintaining laboratory equipment, optimizing workflows, and developing a high complexity testing lab. This role requires strong leadership, technical expertise, and organizational skills to uphold high standards of laboratory testing and patient care. The Lab Manager plays a critical role in maintaining accreditation standards and fostering a collaborative work environment. This is an exempt, full-time position.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversees the laboratory department in accordance with federal and state regulations including CLIA and CAP accrediting bodies.
- Manages and coordinates the activities of the staff, including training, scheduling, competency assessments, and performance evaluations.
- Develops and maintains laboratory policies and procedures.
- Performs equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, calibration, proficiency testing, and validation.
- Ensures all quality assurance and quality control measures are met.
- Supervises and coordinates daily lab activities, ensuring smooth workflow and efficiency.
- Oversees laboratory test performance and validation of new tests.
- Manages inventory, ensuring proper stock of reagents and supplies.
- Works with vendors for equipment servicing, upgrades, and validations.
- Evaluates and implements new laboratory technologies and testing methodologies.
- Functions as a liaison between the laboratory, clinicians, administration, and regulatory bodies.
- Provides reports and updates on lab performance, test results, and compliance issues to management.
- Assists in budget planning, cost control, and financial oversight of laboratory operations.
- Collects and processes patient samples for testing and reference lab testing. This includes assisting with bone marrow aspiration and biopsy procedures.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Directly supervises all employees within the laboratory team.
- Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
- Ensures staff competency through continuing education and proficiency testing.
- Enforces laboratory safety policies and OSHA regulations.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Licensed or eligible for Nevada State License as a Medical Technologist.
- Credentials as a Medical Technologist (MT) and certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
- Five (5) years of clinical laboratory experience.
- General experience in all areas of laboratory including chemistry.
- Management experience or experience as a CAP survey team member.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Strong attention to detail and be able to prioritize and complete tasks in a timely manner.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to manage staff, to maximize productivity and maintain internal controls and processes.
- Strong computer skills.
- A comprehensive knowledge of laboratory regulatory requirements is essential for ensuring adherence to state and federal guidelines.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT :
- Frequently required to sit, stand, walk.
- Frequently required to utilize hand and finger dexterity.
- Occasionally required to lift, push, carry 15 pounds.
- Ability to pass a visual acuity/visual color discrimination test.
LANGUAGE SKILLS : Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred but not required.

Compensation range commensurate with experience. Candidates will receive the compensation range during the initial interview.
