As Laboratory Technician in the R&D Innovation Development group you are primarily responsible for supporting R&D efforts in the preparation, testing and evaluation of new materials for potential use across the various business areas Diversey serves. You will report to our New Product Development & Innovation Manager Microbiology & Chemistry and be responsible for performing laboratory assignments in collaboration with project chemists and scientists. This will include EPA, EN, and internally developed test procedures on experimental microbiology formulations and competitive products. Additionally, you will be expected to prepare necessary reagents and media, record experimental data, maintain a laboratory notebook, make calculations and prepare data reports, assist with inventory management, use various laboratory equipment, and maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment.

Responsibilities include:

Technical Depth/Skills

  • Works on one or more projects requiring ability to handle complex testing and multiple studies.
  • Can follow proscribed techniques/SOPs to conduct specific tests. Ultimately, able to train others on specific tests and techniques.
  • Demonstrates ability to work with minimal guidance once specified testing or activities have been assigned. Ultimately, must be able to perform independent work and plan own schedule to complete project(s) goals.
  • Possesses ability to have skilled quality driven techniques for reproduceable results.
  • Demonstrates ability to work as a part of a team.
  • Collects data for method development and assists in method validation
  • Knowledge of basic microbiological methods including culture transfer, microbial enumeration, media preparation and disposal, and aseptic technique.

Data Handling and Analysis

  • Collects and records test data and observations in a clear and concise manner.
  • Records experimental data and observations in a laboratory notebook.
  • Prepares data overview, combining related results and able to clearly state objectives and results.
  • Performs basic data interpretation with minimal input from laboratory supervisors or chemists.
  • Performs routine calculations.

Interpretive / Decision Making

  • May participate in project team meetings or discussions.
  • Provides input for planning of project progress.
  • Interprets data for discussion with the project team.
  • Interfaces with multiple researchers inside of the department.
  • Participates in workflow and scheduling.
  • Organizes their own daily and weekly activities based on priorities and plans set forth.

Equipment

  • Assists in operation and maintenance of a lab and lab equipment
  • Operates autoclave as directed by microbiologist/chemist/scientist
  • Identifies and suggests procedure/equipment changes needed for new experiments
  • Evaluates new equipment or procedures with supervision
  • Identifies areas for improvement in existing systems or processes

Safety

  • Responsible for practicing safe working habits. Is aware of hazards associated with work assigned, observes safe work practices, keeps equipment neat, clean and in safe operating condition, and maintains good housekeeping standards.
  • Performs miscellaneous related duties as assigned, which may include attendance at safety meetings, safety checks, and raw materials inventory.
  • Read and follow recommendations on Material Safety Data Sheets
  • Familiar with Biosafety requirements for the laboratory
  • Able to work with Biosafety level one two organisms

Skills, Certification or Special Training

  • Minimum 2 years AA degree in microbiology, biology, or relevant technical program with two years experience or 4 year college degree in microbiology, biology or relevant technical program.
  • Scientific knowledge and ability to understand and carry out standard methods (SOPs) with aseptic technique
  • Working knowledge of safe microbiology lab function
  • Working knowledge on safe usage of autoclaves
  • Working knowledge of BSL2 labs
  • Basic computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases are required.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills are required.
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
  • Ability to meet technical challenges associated with specific areas of expertise.
  • Ability to organize work with flexibility to shift priorities as needed.

The expected compensation range for this position is between $51,800.00 and $86,300.00 plus discretionary bonuses. The exact compensation may vary based on your skills, experience and other factors permitted by law.
