Position Summary
Provides support to the Laboratory by providing chemical analysis of production materials as well as developing methods for new products.
Essential Functions
- Analyze raw materials, materials in process and finished products for various parameters according to established written procedures.
- Perform tests and analysis other than that of a routine nature under direction of Lab manager or Plant Metallurgist.
- Perform chemical analysis by using various laboratory instruments, including gravimetric, ICP, and XRF.
- Perform metallurgical testing as required (i.e. micro-section preparation, hardness and mechanical property testing such as tensile and resistance) utilizing metallurgical equipment.
- Provide direct feedback to Metal Casting operations providing melt charge calculations for heat corrections to meet desired element target objectives.
- Participate in Method Development, validations and certification activities.
- Write SOP's for new product testing as well as modified products.
- Participate in the quality control program by assisting in routine audits and continuous process improvements.
- Actively support the New Product Development team with new product, process or equipment research as it pertains to lab responsibilities.
- Train employees in their areas of work including routine chemical and physical analytical methods, procedures and techniques.
- Verify the work of assigned employees for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques and compliance with applicable standards and specifications.
- Oversee the use, care and operation of laboratory equipment.
- Maintain laboratory records and databases.
- Maintain good housekeeping and safe work habits in accordance with Lean and 5S
- Prepare Certificate of Analysis for outgoing material.
- Source and validate chemical supply vendors.
- Assist lab manager in assessment and procurement of new laboratory equipment; troubleshoot, clean and maintain laboratory equipment and supplies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (i.e. Windows, Excel, Powerpoint) and proficient writing and communication skills.
- Extensive experience operating laboratory equipment (ICP, XRF).
- Self-motivated to learn new techniques and instrumentation.
- Supervisory skills directing laboratory staff
- Meticulous attention to detail.
- Knowledge and experience with Lean 5S concepts.
- Safe work attitude.
- Good financial acumen.
- Must be a US Citizen or have permanent resident status in the US.
EDUCATION
- BA/BS in Chemistry related field Degree
- 2 years experience in a laboratory setting
- Experience working in a manufacturing laboratory.
